Word count is both less important than many new writers think, and more important.

If you're writing non-fiction articles and you have a word count target from a publisher, it's usually important to nail it, +/- five words.

If you're writing for fiction markets, it's important to get within =/- 100 words of the requested word count.

It's always better to nail a requested word count than not.
