And, in a lot of ways, silent tolerance of hatred is worse than those frothing at the mouths to destroy lives.

I'm collecting resources about how to be an ally—not only in terms of QUILTBAG, but in terms of other minorities that are likely to be targets.

We're still collecting resource links, but I need to get the ones we've got compiled and posted in their new home.

If you look in this thread and have suggestions for a new resource, please.

Check the link
Determine what kind of resource it is
Create a link based on the Website's title
Write a brief one or two sentence annotation.

See sample below

And I'll combine them all.

Thanks much—

Sample Format

How to Be an Ally
Human Rights Campaign How To Be an Ally
A short list of ways to be an ally for QUILTBAG/LGBT people. As the site says: “An “ally” is a term used to describe someone who is supportive of LGBT people. It encompasses non-LGBT allies as well as those within the LGBT community who support each other, e.g. a lesbian who is an ally to the bisexual community.”

Copy/Pasta of the PM I sent in of resources. Not just for the LGBTQIA+, but for a good many things in jeopardy. Largely for allies who don't know where to start.

Brace yourself, it's long.

Do you mind if I share this list in a blog I'm planning that will compile various lists of resources?

I've not got many followers, but I'd like to do my small part to help spread options and access to resources.

Why would I mind? :tongue I didn't collect those links to hoard them away from the world. Like a big mean link-lusting dragon. Share away!

If people want to do something that would be really helpful, claiming a group of links and checking them, adding a title for the site and a one or two sentence annotation about what it is/does offers, would help me hugely.

If people are willing to do that, I'll split it off into its own thread in here.

Totally in (and probably should have done that in the first place). It might take me a bit, so other helpers would be awesome.

Ralph's side of the island.
I'll add this one to Kate's list, The Gay-Straight Alliance Network:

https://gsanetwork.org/

GSA Network is a next-generation LGBTQ racial and gender justice organization that empowers and trains queer, trans and allied youth leaders to advocate, organize, and mobilize an intersectional movement for safer schools and healthier communities.

It's a high school resource. With the kids walking out of schools to protest, if your kids' high schools don't have a participating group, this is a good time to share the link with them if they are interested.

I'll take everything I posted up through "women in politics centric" for now. Stay tuned to this space for a nicely formatted list.

ETA:

How To Contact Your Elected Official
For American allies: Learn how to get in touch with your federal, state, and local elected leaders. The most immediate thing you can do is contact those already in politics and urge them to support minorities. Not just useful now, but every time discrimination is on the docket.

American Civil Liberties Union
Main page for the ACLU. Provides a long list of calls to action, information on your individual rights, and a number of ways to donate. From the site: "For almost 100 years, the ACLU has worked to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States."

Southern Poverty Law Center
Main page for the SPLC. From the site: "The Southern Poverty Law Center is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy, the SPLC works toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality." The site to check if you suspect an organization or individual involvement in a hate group. Volunteers and donations accepted.

Anti-Defamation League
Main page for the ADL. Began life specifically to combat anti-semitism in America. From the site: "Now the nation's premier civil rights/human relations agency, ADL fights anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry, defends democratic ideals and protects civil rights for all." Provides a map to find your local chapter, calls to action, and opportunities to donate.

Planned Parenthood
From the site: "Planned Parenthood is a trusted health care provider, an informed educator, a passionate advocate, and a global partner helping similar organizations around the world. Planned Parenthood delivers vital reproductive health care, sex education, and information to millions of women, men, and young people worldwide" It is best to donate or volunteer at your local health center, though there are a number of ways to get involved with the national organization.

Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN)
The US's largest and most well respected anti sexual violence charity and advocacy group. They operate the National Sexual Assault Hotline (details below), orchestrate educational and community outreach programs to prevent sexual violence, and lobby lawmakers to bring perpetrators to justice. Here's how to get involved or donate.

National Sexual Assault Hotline
If you or someone you love has been the victim of sexual violence, RAINN provides confidential one-on-one support from trained crisis councilors who can point you to further resources. Please call 1-800-656-HOPE. A chatroom option is available (linked above) for those who cannot call.

Center for Reproductive Rights
A global lobbying organization seeking to secure reproductive rights around the world. From the site: "The Center for Reproductive Rights uses the law to advance reproductive freedom as a fundamental human right that all governments are legally obligated to protect, respect, and fulfill."

NARAL - Pro-Choice America
The oldest abortion rights advocacy group and political action committee in the US. Organized volunteers through state affiliates to lobby local and national lawmakers to protect abortion rights. Provides some online options for activism.

National Coalition Against Domestic Violence
Home of the powerful Remember My Name campaign for those who lost their lives to domestic violence and abuse. From the site: "The vision of NCADV is to create a culture where domestic violence is not tolerated; and where society empowers victims and survivors, and holds abusers accountable." State coalitions exist across the nation and are always in need of volunteers.

Reproductive Health Access Project
Connects primary care clinicians across 38 states and the District of Columbia to training opportunities in reproductive health and comprehensive care, and encourages the medical field to get involved in advocacy. Not a medical professional? Make a donation.

EMiLY's List
Political action committee with the goal of electing pro-choice, Democratic women to public office. They provide tools to get women into the races at all levels and run the Women Vote! initiative.

She Should Run
A non-partisan alternative to EMiLY's List, She Should Run aims to get women of all stripes into public office. They provide training and resources should you wish to run for office and a convenient form to ask a woman you admire to considering running.

Running Start Online
Founded in 2006 to address the absence of equal representation in government, Running Start provides internships, mentorships, and other resources to college-aged women with an interest in seeking public office.

I'll volunteer to do the next set of links (the ones labeled LGBTQIA+) as long as it's okay for me to make the post tomorrow since I'm so utterly stressed and brain-dead tonight I'd probably make really dumb mistakes.

So thank you.

Couldn't sleep, so lets see how well I did with this. Please feel free to point out any typos, confusing sentences, or links I managed to screw up somehow.

The Trevor Project
This site provides a toll-free crises intervention and suicide prevention hotline for LGBTQ youth. They also provide text messaging support for youth in crisis, which is important for a lot of people who have difficulties with verbal expression under stress. From their main page you can access many ways to support them, including monetary donations, volunteering options, and links to local/regional resources.

Trans Lifeline
This is a crisis line for transgender people, available in both the United States and Canada. The hotlines are completely staffed by trans-identifying people, and they do not call emergency services without the consent of their callers. Note that as of 11/11/2016 they are expressing an urgent need for donations due to a massive flood of calls after the US election.

Mazzoni Center
This is a very large LGBTQ health and well-being center that serves the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area. They offer general medical, sexual health, and behavorial health services as well as trans-specific services. They also offer a wealth of legal resources and are sponsoring the 2017 Trans Health Conference in Philadelphia. Here is a recent blog post from them reaffirming that they never turn anyone away for lack of insurance. Click here to donate.

Sylvia Rivera Law Project
The Sylvia Rivera Law Project works to guarantee freedom of gender identity and expression. They offer legal help for people seeking name changes, correct ID, immigration, and more. From their main page you can donate, volunteer, and see additional ways to get involved.

Familia Trans Queer Liberation Movement
An advocacy group for the Latinx queer and trans community. Click here to donate to them today.

Alder Health Services*
This is the only LGBT-friendly healthcare provider here in central Pennsylvania, and the only place offering trans-specific healthcare services. They provide both physical and behavorial healthcare of a great quality despite their shoe-string budget and are a truly essential resource for a rural, conservative area. Please consider donating to them today, or do it on 11/18/2016 when one of our local county community funds will be matching a percentage of online donations.

*Yes, this is a link I added myself. Alder is an essential resource to my own community which I couldn’t let be overlooked. Hopefully no one will mind me doing that.

Nice job. :)

Note: I think the rest of the links in Katesmash's list are finished. I sent a PM to AW Admin. Maybe others might want to wait for her to chime in before working on that list.

Small thing to do in daily life and a little 101 reading for those just getting started:

What to Do if You Witness Islamophobic Harassment
An illustrated guide by French freelance artist/illustrator Marie-Shirine Yener detailing how to help victims of harassment as it occurs through non-confrontation. It teaches to redirect the focus of the victim from their attacker to you through benign conversation. In the end, it shuts down the attack but shutting it out. This method works well for all kinds of public harassment.

The Do's and Don'ts of Being a Good Ally
An article from writer/activist Mikki Kendall on The Angry Black Woman, detailing the very basics of good allyship behavior. If you are new to the discussion of diversity and oppression, this is a very valuable place to start your reading.

On Making Mistakes
An article from software engineer and writer Julie Pagano on her eponymous blog detailing how to react when you make the inevitable mistakes that come with allyship. Told from the perspective of an ally. The final two steps are the most vital. For further reading, check out her allies and 101 tags.

"Check My What?" - On Privilege and What We Can Do About It
A blog post that lays out the general concept of privilege in very basic terms. It includes heavy annotations for deeper reading into more specific concepts.

Straight White Male: The Lowest Difficulty Setting There Is
An essay aimed toward straight white cis-men to explain privilege and intersectionality by science fiction writer John Scalzi. It relies on references to video game difficulty settings to make the point with tongue-in-cheek humor. Valuable and entertaining, but beware the comments.

Translated.
I'll take on the Children/Youth section to check links and expand with info.

I'll add the True Colors Fund, a national US 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to end homelessness among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youth. About 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBT. Homelessness is bad enough, but it's a setup for still more bad outcomes. I'm afraid homelessness amongst LGBT-identifying youth will only increase as the political climate changes.

Thanks but all the posted links have been checked.

That said, we're still looking for new resources.

And thanks.

I managed not to even notice this last night, but will add it to my post for simplicities sake (I think Admin's intention is to combine our posts into a sticky?) along with another resource I know for a rural LGBT advocacy group... assuming I can make my disaster of a bookmarks folder cough up the site. Assuming Admin doesn't mind me expanding the list beyond Kate's resources. I am vetting what I add and know MaeZe's is legitimate.

#SafetyPin
What began as a response against an increase of hate crimes and harassment following Brexit, has now been adopted by Americans as a signal that they are an ally to those most vulnerable to the new administration. The idea is a simple one: pin a plain safety pin to your shirt or jacket to mark yourself as a safe haven.

So I'm sick as dog, still, but I'm working on a organized sticky. Probably going to be more than one.

So if you see things that you think are missing, please post them, and I'll get to 'em, I promise.

And thank you, all of you. I really appreciate all the help.

You've been awesome, and it really does help to have something positive to focus on instead of just sitting around crying and raging (though tears and anger are a necessary part of dealing with pain too). I'm sorry you're sick. It's been a horrible year for colds and cruds (my husband is now sick with his second nasty cold in the past month or so, which is really odd for him. Praying he doesn't give the second one to me as I'm still coughing from the first one he gave me).
