This may move to be the opening line of the first chapter if the chapter that comes after it turns out to work better as a prologue, but here you go...

To say Horace Rathebone II was a materialistic man was like saying a dragon had a slight gold fixation; if there was ever an award for Most Miserly Workhouse Foreman, Horace was likely to steal it and have it melted down to something of more value.
