Communities and Forums for Writers

It’s a big Internet, and there are a lot of other communities and forums for writers. Don't limit yourself; explore the world. Here are a few of our favorites, though please note a listing here is provided as a service to our members and is not an endorsement.

The Colline Gate
"Thoughtful political discussion"—this is a politics discussion community created by a group of writers with a keen interest in politics, philosophy and current events.

Critique Circle
“Critique Circle runs on a credit system. You "pay" three credits to submit a story, and receive credits for writing a critique of someone else's story. The credits you receive range from 1/2 to 2 per crit, depending on the length of the crit and the length of the story.

If you purchase a premium subscription, you have three credits from the start and can submit a story right away!”

Critters.org
“The ultimate goal of Critters is to help improve your craft, not only by having your work dissected by other members, but also by learning to dissect your own work (by, of course, dissecting others). The value of the latter is often overlooked by beginners.”

Fantasy-Writers.org
“Fantasy-Writers.org is the perfect site for writers and readers of fantasy fiction, providing a space to post your stories and receive friendly, constructive advice from our large community, including many published authors.” Accounts are free.

Mythic Scribes
“Mythic Scribes is a community of fantasy writers who are passionate about storytelling. We provide a platform for new and aspiring authors, as well as a meeting place for writers and fans of the genre.”

NaNoWriMo.org is a community built around writing a novel during November: “ational Novel Writing Month happens every November! It’s a fun, seat-of-your-pants writing event where the challenge is to complete an entire novel in just 30 days. For one month, you get to lock away your inner editor, let your imagination take over, and just create!” During the rest of the year, there’s CampNaNoWriMo. “Camp NaNoWriMo is a virtual writer’s retreat, designed for maximum flexibility and creativity. We have Camp sessions in both April and July, and we welcome word-count goals between 30 and 1,000,000.” and there’s the NaNoWriMo Young Writers Program, too. Don’t forget AW’s NaNoWriMo and Beyond subforum so AWers participating in NaNoWriMo can support each other.

Romance Divas

“Founded in November 2004, Romance Divas is an award winning, writer's resource website and discussion forum dedicated to the romance and writing community!”

Scribeophile
Scribeophile is a community that focuses on critique; there’s a free membership level, and a paid level. Lots of critting, and lots of help.

She Writes
She Writes describes itself as “a essential, trusted resource and community for women who write.” You’ll need to sign up to join.

Writer's Beat
“We are a community of authors that share a common passion: writing. At the Writer’s Beat writing forums we discuss various topics related to the art of writing.”

Writer’s Digest Forum
A community associated with Writer’s Digest.

Writing Forums.com
“We are a privately owned but community managed active writing forum where you can share your work, talk with other writers, and creative artists in a safe and friendly environment, exchange tips and tricks and loads more.” Lots of critting going on! And writingforums.com are on Twitter, too.

WritingForums.org
“Our goal is to create a writing community unlike any other — one where writers of all types feel at completely at home as part of the community, feel open to sharing their writing, and where writers help each other improve their writing and achieve their writing goals.”

Writersanctum.com
This is a brand new forum with a lot of enthusiastic energy. They don't have a forum description yet, but they seem particularly interested in self-publishing for the Kindle. Lots of activity and energy.

Young Writers Society
“We are an online community for young writers ages 13+.”
