I have a character whose parents are from Gujarat state (not sure exactly where--they only appear in one scene and are minor characters). During their exchange I want her father to refer to her with a Gujarati term of endearment. The idea is that the phrase reminds her of her childhood and how much her parents love her, which adds to the guilt she feels in this scene (where she chooses work over them).

I Googled and found a few options, but I'm not sure if they work in context:

1. Maro popat, which I believe was described as "cheesy" and used for a young child. My character is 33, but her dad is a bit kooky and very loving so I thought maybe it could work?

2. Baka, which was described as a more general term for somebody younger than yourself... but then one place translated it as "son", so I don't know if it can be used for a female?

If it matters, these are the two places I want to use one / both:

“Work, [term of endearment]?” Mr Sharma’s face dropped. “You can’t miss one day?”

[Other dialogue]

“Are you sure you can’t come, [term of endearment]?”

Thank you in advance!

I asked my Gujarati coworker, and she said her parents called her baka or beta, which, yes, is typically a male term, but is used for girls as well.

Thank you! I'll go with that. I'm sure I've heard beta, maybe on a TV show.
