I'm reading "The Poetry Home Repair Manual," by Ted Kooser.

"The poem is the device through which the ordinary world is seen in a new way."

Example in the book:

Aritichoke - by Joseph Hutchinson

O heart weighed down by so many wings

Just something to keep us observant.
They don't have to be one line, but for this thread, let's opt for shorter, not longer, however, if one observation leads to a longer piece, go for it.

My observation today -

Little Lamp

Little lamp lights up when touched

The grandfather clock,
Obsessed with time.

A small, white, loyal towel,
giving all of its fibers to
ketchup dribbled on chin,
tears dribbled on cheek.

Yo Cassie! Everyone should read that book! I loved that book. It helped me over a major problem I'd been having.

The artichoke poem? I would imagine anyone who wrote such a thing would die satisfied. What a great piece.

The end of the Sparkler. Below the orange glow, the wire curves into darkness...

The candle,
Dies only when it gives,
Dies only when it lives.

The picture in my bedroom
is a mirror the sailboats
and lighthouse, the sea,
and the cottages,
look into,
too enthralled by
their own beauty to move.

Vacuum Cleaner

All dressed up in a shiny, smart yellow and gray suit,
Silently dripping distain on my dirty carpet,
My vacuum cleaner thinks I've married her son.
If I had, we'd be divorcing.

Humility in a bowl

Priceless!

condom:
a Dorian Gray bodybag
a pliant cloak
through which we touch
without leaving a scar

Holy smoke hat man! *wiping away tears* A Dorian Gray condom? Ha ha. It will never age!

I'm trying to picture this... then again I'm trying not to.:)

I'm giving my washing machine
a rest. I can't find the cut,
but something got hurt,
bad, blood everywhere.

babies and old folks
all look the same
by nature

the rest of us
whether we mean it or not
achieve the same effect
by artifice

Paperclip

I find the mangled paperclip
in a junk drawer,
and attempt
to bend it back
to its simple purpose,
cursing myself
for once asking it
to change.
Slipping it over
a small stack of papers,
I see I am forgiven,
this time.

You must remember me
Every one of me
Then you must deny me
And remember me again
