Tomorrow is the 100th anniversary of the Beaumont-Hamel, the beginning of the Battle of the Somme. Beaufort-Hamel was fought by the Newfoundland Regiment and 700 men were lost. In total, more than 2 000 Newfoundland regiment casualties were noted and brought the Dominion of Newfoundland to its knees, depriving it of men for the next generation. It would lead to the reduced role of Newfoundland during World War II and finally the decision in 1949 to have Newfoundland join Canada.
