How to make use of Facebook

My third ebook will be available on Amazon on the 30th. I've set that as my deadline. But I feel I really need to do something about promotion this time. I just don't really know how, as I have never been involved with social media, and I've never learned the rules. I know people talk about using Facebook to promote, and I do have a page set up in English, but I don't know what to do with it beyond posting the occasional news about my writing, or how to draw attention to the page itself.

Can someone explain to me how people do this?

The main thing is to offer content, not just 'buy my book'. Whether it's on a blog, on Facebook, on Twitter (or better yet, all three), offer information people are interested in. Interview your main character. Give an excerpt. Reveal some back story that isn't in the book. Give some background on the setting. Find an article that's related to the events it's set during (if such exists).

Engaging your audience is much more effective than just hawking your book.
