They have moved on from Nevada to Oregon. Trying to prevent a rancher from going to jail for arson after he was caught burning land beyond his property.

http://www.oregonlive.com/pacific-n...f/2015/12/militiamen_ranchers_in_showdow.html

. . .

Ammon Bundy once helped his father repulse the government in an armed showdown on a Nevada desert. He was Tasered for his effort.

Ryan Payne, an electrician from Montana, joined that same standoff and boasted of organizing civilians into sniper squads that drew a bead on federal agents.

And not long ago, Jon Ritzheimer worried the FBI with his threatening rants against Muslims in Arizona and elsewhere.

Now, the men say, they are in Burns to help Dwight and Steven Hammond.

The Hammonds are father and son ranchers, due to report to federal prison on Monday. They were convicted in 2012 of arson for lighting public land on fire adjacent to their ranch land south of Burns. They have been imprisoned once and must return for an additional term after federal appellate judges said they had been illegally sentenced the first time.

. . .

Oregon is an interesting place to live. The Portland metro area in the northwest region is politically liberal and since it holds most of the population, votes for a lot of stuff the rest of the state cannot abide.

Once outside the major cities' limits, Oregon rapidly becomes rural. And conservative. And somewhat outlaw territory in some places. The Wild West is still alive.

Those militia nutjobs won't be satisfied until they actually get into a firefight with some government agency.

That being said, I'm curious how the ranchers have already served time, and now have to go back to serve more on the grounds that they were "illegally sentenced" the first time. What was their initial sentence? How was it illegal and why does it fall on them if it was?

The initial sentence apparently wasn't long enough, per statutory requirements. The Feds appealed the sentence on these grounds, the court agreed and re-sentenced the pair per the requirements, giving them credit for time served. Essentially, the initial judge ignored the law by making the sentences way too short. I think there was a five year minimum involved here.

Is it really too hard of a concept for some people to understand that you can't set fire to land that you don't own?

Apparently it is. Their belief is "My right to do whatever I want ends at your ... well, actually, it doesn't end. FREEEEDOOOOOOM!"

The militia members have been insisting that
Harney County Sheriff Dave Wardcreate a sanctuary so the Hammonds will be immune from surrendering. Ward met with the militiamen and rejected that demand. The militia has since labeled him an "enemy of the people." Ward said he has received emailed death threats among thousands of messages from across the country regarding the Hammonds.

Extremely disturbing.

A group of militiamen on Saturday occupied the headquarters of a national wildlife refuge in Oregon in support of two brothers who are slated to report to prison on Monday on arson charges, the Oregonian newspaper reported.

"We're planning on staying here for years, absolutely," Ammon Bundy, one of the occupiers, told the newspaper via telephone.

Militia members at the refuge claimed to have as many as 150 supporters with them. The Malheur National Wildlife refuge building, federal property managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, was closed for the holiday weekend.

Just heard about this all the way over here, and since there was no thread... Here you go.

What's going on?

I know what a third of humanity is thinking right now...

Thank God they aren't Muslim. If they were, the backlash would be epically horrible.

Nope, instead they're white. There will be no 24-7 news coverage, no speculation by self-appointed experts, no presidential address. Nope, nothing to see here, everyone move on...

Suicide by Feds?

Ugh.

They're not going to be satisfied until they initiate a full on firefight ala Waco. Then once they do, they'll just scream about how the Fed's "unwarranted aggression" just shows how right they were all along.

I hate these kind of people. No matter what, you're giving them what they want. Back down, and they cheer for their victory. Blow up the building with all of them inside, they were right all along. Storm the building and arrest the ones that don't get shot, and having to bury good police officers after the fact just isn't worth it.

So what the hell are we supposed to do?

Quietly build your case for sedition against them, survey, and wait until they aren't a part of the group, say, when they're traveling somewhere. Then arrest them.

Why can't those cowboy crackers do something useful like go fight IS in Syria and northern Iraq? They're having a temper tantrum because some equally idiotic arsonists got caught.

What's a "cowboy cracker?"

Not worry about whether they're getting what they want, or can spin to their narrative, presumably.

I mean the same applies to ISIS, no? Ignore them and you're afraid of them/acknowledge their right to take over shit and kill and enslave people. Fight them and it demonstrates their power and how you hate muslims. Etc.

I saw "millennials", for what it's worth.

:D

Seriously, let them freeze their asses off. There's very bad cell phone coverage and it's an empty building. You couldn't pick a more remote place to have no one care about. Whoever chose that spot was quite the quivering coward who didn't want to actually be seen as doing anything.

Let them stay in an empty, unheated building for as long as they want - it'll be a nice footnote for the next year as they slink in and slink out.

Fools.

I tend to figure that if these types had the brains to do offer anything constructive to the world, they'd be doing that instead.

Here's hoping nobody gets killed.

My thought is they should blast them with really irritating theme music from toddler shows, on endless loop. There can be no victory in surrendering to a constant barrage of Teletubbies and Barney music.

My thought is they should blast them with really irritating theme music from toddler shows, on endless loop. There can be no victory in surrendering to a constant barrage of Teletubbies and Barney music.

Those are pretty old shows. There is a reasonable shot many of these militiamen grew up with them and may still fondly recall the music.

Better to use more recent shows like "My Little Pony" or "Spongebob Squarepants" or "Yo Gabba Gabba".
