I'm a bit of a skeptic about things labeled "prologues", especially in unpublished manuscripts, for a variety of reasons expressed elsewhere previously in numerous threads. However, that's not a categorical objection. Just last night I started reading a novel with begins with an absolutely wonderful prologue: The Pyrates, by George Macdonald Fraser. The "prologue" isn't actually labeled as such, but that's clearly what it is, and it's hilarious and absolutely appropriate for the novel. It works the way any good prologue should, to compel the reader into the story. I recommend it to everyone.
