Note on potential ease of access problems

If there's anything I can do to make the xwd more accessible, please let me know either in thread or by PM and I'll do my best to make it happen.

Here is some information:

  • Complete the crossword by posting answers in this thread.

  • I'll endeavour to update the grid and respond to answers at least twice daily.

  • The grid follows XWD conventions from The Times, though occasionally things might be a little more lib (or a little more ripe) in style or content.

  • Feel free to tell me how I could've done it better/what I got wrong.

  • I'll post a new crossword on the first of each month until people get bored/stop playing.

Here are some guidelines:

  • Try to have fun.

  • Answer up to three clues a day (if you go for 3 and only get 1 right, then feel free to have another 2 goes)

  • Work together or on your own.

  • Bemoan the clues.

  • It's encouraged (but not necessary) to parse the clues when answering as it'll help me learn where I am going wrong/right.

  • Discussion of clue construction is also encouraged, but not necessary.

  • Try to have fun.

Here's where you take over:

  • Good luck :)

Ooh, I think I have another one: 5a: ATTEND? means "Go to", "a" = A, "temperature" = T and "nurse" = TEND (as in "I tended to their wounds")

Apologies for the tardy reply to this - busy day. :)

You think and you do - perfectly parsed, LH! :)

7d: EVENTUALLY: means "at last", "posh" = U (as in upper class), "friend" = ALLY and "happening" = EVENT with "to come first" means it goes at the front.

Hopefully that opens the board up a bit :)

Yup - though what really helps to open it up are the lights which lead to first letters. :)

1d. DASH? means "Sprint", "finish in world" = D (last letter in "world") "athletics sees Hoskins at the front" = ASH (first letters in "athletics sees Hoskins").

OK, stab in the dark time :)

16a WATERFALL, means "douche" (as in a shower), total = "ALL", then the rest is a mystery...

11d WEDDING AISLE? means "Part of church" and has the right number of letters...

Otherwise, I am completely stuck!

Shooting wide on these, though 16a does have ALL in it and 11d is something seen in church. However, I think the problem lies with me and not you - although most of the clues are sound in this grid, there are a few which are a bit woolly. Because of that, I've put in all the first letters of the clues to try and help out a bit. :)

Ok, I've gone backwards and guessed the word first with these but:

12a AMPHITHEATRE, means "building", RE = on (is in "regarding the news blah blah"), HIT = "Murder", AMP = unit (of electric current), and so police = "HEAT"? (I guess if robbers have heat then the police are on to them?)

14d: FRIGHTENED, means "Afraid", RIGHT = "hand" inside FEN = "bog", ED = the ends ("at the rim") of "encrusted"

Is no-one else playing this month :D

13d looks like a misspelled CARTWRIGHT. I know that's wrong. Doubting CARTRIGHT is correct too.

Apologies if I'm hogging this but:

13d CARTRIDGES, means "mags" (as in magazines), CART+RI = "Cut Cartier rings" (the first parts of cartier and rings), DGES = first letters ("first seen") of "damn good society" (although there is an E missing... or is it an anagram of "cartier" and then "rings" means to go around the first letters of "damn good societey"?)

15a AGREE? means "Say yes to" and then I don't know about the rest. A word that means "party" cut short?

Apologies if I'm hogging this but:

Nope, you're not hogging it at all. If there's only a single player then it is likely others are busy, or more likely (and nothing wrong with this) that the crossword here has run its course. :)

Perfectly parsed with the second parsing! :)

15a AGREE? means "Say yes to" and then I don't know about the rest. A word that means "party" cut short?

Bang on! GREEN is the political party. :)
