CDC Expands E. coli Warning to All Romaine Lettuce

I was just in my local Safeway, which had dozens of bags of romaine for sale. When I asked about it at the service desk, I was told "we're pretty sure ours is okay."

Reassuring, no?

And then I realized that my lunch at a nearby restaurant had included romaine lettuce. :tongue

From all romaine reports I've seen, the E. coli risk is limited to chopped romaine from Yuma, Arizona. Whole heads of red or greed romaine, full size or baby, including those from Yuma, are not affected.

Typically, restaurants are not affected because they don't buy their produce pre-chopped, which is far more expensive.

In a small aside, the paper contained a little article wondering why females are far more often affected by E. coli outbreaks such as the present one with romaine and the past outbreaks involving spinach and tomatoes. Duh? I know lots of women who eat a salad for lunch, have a salad instead of fries at a restaurant, etc. It's a rare man who has salad two times a day most days of the week.

From the article linked in my previous post:

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has expanded its warning about an E. coli outbreak connected to romaine lettuce to cover all forms of romaine, including whole heads and hearts of romaine grown in the Yuma, Arizona, growing area. A previous warning was limited to chopped forms of romaine, including salads and salad mixes.

Yes, I was going to post this clarification. ^

"E. coli outbreak connected to romaine lettuce to cover all forms of romaine, including whole heads and hearts of romaine grown in the Yuma, Arizona, growing area."

If your store can't say were the romaine is from, don't buy or eat it.

This was interesting:
Although no other Alaska cases have been reported, the outbreak is believed to be part of a larger one affecting at least 53 persons across 16 states. McLaughlin said the cause is believed to be romaine lettuce grown in Yuma, AZ., which produces much of the nation's romaine crop during the winter before spring romaine growing moves to Salinas, CA.
So maybe best not to eat any romaine for a while.

And this:
The CDC as well as the FDA are closely examining the epidemic, which may have widened in scope slightly due to the Alaska cases. "Our outbreak is the 1st one I know of nationally that's been associated with the consumption of whole heads of lettuce rather than chopped lettuce," McLaughlin said. "What this outbreak suggests is that the source of the contamination may actually be at the farm rather than the lettuce processing center."
The case in the AK jail has given the CDC more to go on to pinpoint the specific farm in Yuma.

E-coli cases from suspected Yuma AZ area romaine lettuce have increased.

https://www.cdc.gov/ecoli/2018/o157h7-04-18/index.html
Posted May 9, 2018 1:45 PM EST

What's New?
Twenty-eight more ill people from 12 states were added to this investigation since the last update on May 2, 2018.
Four more states have reported ill people: Florida, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Texas
The most recent illness started on April 25, 2018. Illnesses that occurred in the last two to three weeks might not yet be reported because of the time between when a person becomes ill with E. coli and when the illness is reported to CDC....

Advice to Consumers:
Do not eat or buy romaine lettuce unless you can confirm it is not from the Yuma growing region. Romaine lettuce has a shelf life of several weeks, and contaminated lettuce could still be in homes, stores, and restaurants.
Product labels often do not identify growing regions; so, do not eat or buy romaine lettuce if you do not know where it was grown.
This advice includes whole heads and hearts of romaine, chopped romaine, baby romaine, organic romaine, and salads and salad mixes containing romaine lettuce. If you do not know if the lettuce in a salad mix is romaine, do not eat it. ...

Case Count: 149
States: 29
Deaths: 1
Hospitalizations: 64
Recall: No
