I'm interested. I'm not sure I'd do this, but it's encouraging to see the line is subtle, not all Tammy Faye.

MissStrawberri, when our daughter was a teen, and eons ago when I was a teen and young adult, we found very little exposure to sun made a big difference. Ten minutes twice a week helped me, although three times a week was better.

Having lived in really hot climates, I know it's possible to get out without melting. You have to get up early, which is no fun, but then you've had your walk (or run, bike ride, swim, whatever) and your sun exposure, and once you're showered, the rest of the day is yours--without guilt that you haven't done this stuff yet. That part's pretty sweet. Actually, a walk at seven on a summer morning can be pretty sweet, too.

Maryn, gloating because it may not reach 70 today

I have to fix my sleep schedule before I begin. Though, it's more... "Stay up really late until I'm too tired to care about being comfortable." Often I wake up sore on my left side (which is what I sleep on). I can't actually sleep in any position, well. On my back my large chest suffocates me (my BF says I REALLY snore when I AM sleeping that way), and obviously sleeping on the chest won't help. On my sides it's more like sleeping on my shoulder than a pillow--which is probably why it hurts.

I think I need a body pillow.

Miss S., I think you could go out at the other end of the day just the same. I get my days and nights mixed up regularly too, because I don't have a regular job or little kids to keep me on track anymore and if I'm on a good writing streak at night, I don't stop over the time. And I love my giant pillow (not quite a body pillow but same idea). Not sure why, I just sleep better that way.

Btw, does anyone know if you are supposed to tip your permanent makeup artist? I just realized I did not and now I feel Incorrect, especially since she was so nice. I can double tip next time but don't know the etiquette. I'm not sure if she's an employee or renting a space in someone else's spa.

Wheeeee girl stuff!

Well I went to my beautician today to laser some more of my chin hair follicles to death. It's always extremely painful, but also extremely effective. So when she offered today to also butcher my girlstache for free, I went "I'll just keep shaving" and "Oh no no no no no" but she didn't take "Oh no no no no no" for an answer and mistook my resignation for consent as I squirmed. The whole experience was rather pornographic. She lathered my face with slippery cold gel, then wiped her elongated, hot, moist, tick all over it as it exploded into a thousand sparks all over my chin and top lip.

Ha, I had that done a long time ago (probably need it again). The burning hair smelled like toast.

I guess I'm either lucky I can get by with tweezers--or my vision is worse than I think it is.

I've mentioned elsewhere that I'm not feeling well--upset stomach, nothing serious--and chiding myself for hoping it translates into a loss at the scales. How shallow can I be?

I've spent the whole day either online or reading a very dense novel, and I'm bored and restless. Maybe that means I'm better?

Today at the pharmacy. I'm standing there waiting for my dog's steroids as I notice a forgotten receipt on the counter. Bored, I pick it up to see if this is another of those dumbass Israeli businesses who print the entire credit card number. Nah, ain't. So I look what they bought. Flucanol... Candestene... Ah.
Pharmacist comes back, I'm like, "Poor girl be itching bad, ey?"
He blinks, I reach him the receipt. He looks at it, blushes, goes, "Ah... yeah." He puts it away and regroups: "But not anymore!"

Here's my before and after eyeliner tattoos shots, if anyone is interested..

https://twitter.com/Carly_Berg

I couldn't see the pics. Are they gone?

I'm in this thread because I'm finally admitting that I need to wear concealer. I have rosacea, not the bumpy kind but the redness and little spider veins on my face. I never really think about it much but I took a selfie (ok, 2) the other day after a haircut and noticed how the veins are really noticeable.

I need to wear foundation. The one thing I really don't like in makeup, because it makes me feel smothered. And I'm never sure I've got the right color. I know there's much better stuff out there than when I was growing up eons ago. BB cream? That kind of stuff. I need something heavy enough to cover the veins, but light enough that I will actually wear it.

Any suggestions?

I don't wear any makeup now, haven't for years. Just on special occasions. And since I'm rather anti-social, very few of those kinds of events. If I start with foundation, I might add in some eye color. I've been thinking about using eye shadow as war paint rather than "hey boys aren't I cute?" - with my hair going-going-gone silver, I could use some color. I have dark brown eyes and dark eyebrows.

I can do the color stuff myself, but the foundation - :flag:I tried going to Ulta, a store similar to Sephora (which isn't close by) but the sales staff there wear tons of makeup, and I just can't relate to them at all.

@Juniper- I deleted my pics from Twitter but I'm getting my lips done next week so I'll probably put them back up for a couple of days then. (I don't like having my face "out there" too much)

You'd probably like BB cream, it's like tinted moisturizer. I have Maybelline Dream Fresh BB cream for the summer and I like it. It's too hot for anything heavy!

About color (eyes, lips) I always hear go with lighter shades as you age. Which I think is true unless you have darker skin, in which case I'm not sure...

Anyone tried facial exercises? Did they do any good? I need a lift and don't want to go under the knife.

I've read about them but haven't tried them. Or if you want improvement but not surgery, you could go halfway and do botox and fillers.

This is a fun thread and I'm going to try some of the tips suggested here.

I have a very minimal makeup routine - Oil of Olay regenerist day cream (SPF 18) light foundation (with sunscreen) just under my eyes, around my nose and on my chin to even out my colour. Grey eye liner which is just applied in a very thin line on the outer edges of my eyes (smudged underneath), eye lashes curled and a coat of mascara, Burt's Bees lip moisturizer in "rhubarb" and a dab of cream blush that I mix with my moisturizer - makes me glow without having visible blush lines. My routine takes tops 3 minutes.

The most important thing that I do for my skin, is exfoliate everyday, which I do in my morning bath with a "buff puff"(those white oval facial scrubbies) with Dove soap. I'm in my mid 50's and I've had people comment on my great skin which I think is attributed to the daily exfoliation.

I also don't think that expensive is necessarily better, especially for washing your face since any cleanser is immediately rinsed off, so I use a tearless baby wash on a face cloth to wash my face at night. It removes eye makeup without stinging my eyes and leaves my skin very soft.

I've got lots of things that I don't like about my body but it still functions so I suppose I'll live with it, however I'm most annoyed with the fact that I've developed "jowls" and a double chin. I'm scared to go under the knife for a neck lift, so I was thinking about trying "Thermage" on my neck and chin - has anyone here tried it?

I got passport photos yesterday--you're not the only one with jowls, so if you try that, let me know how it works. The photographer nixed my raised chin, too, since it made funny reflections in my glasses. Sigh...

Juniper, I use Garnier BB cream on almost-no-makeup days. It minimizes but does not fully cover the under-eye circles and the spider veins on nose and chin. I have rosacea, too, and it tones it down a notch or two, but my face is still somewhat pink with only the BB on. It's as fast as putting on moisturizer, though, and there's much to be said for speed. It's SPF 15 or 20, I forget which, but I don't feel sealed in plastic.

For better coverage without looking all made up, I am sold on Bare Minerals powdered foundation, the matte one, which I buy at Ulta. An employee applies it, helping you get the right color. My first one, they apparently tried to match rather than conceal even though I asked for them to cancel out the pink, and in the light at home I was pretty rosy. So I took it back and got a better color, no charge. Under it, I use Erase Paste on spider veins only. What I really like about it is that nobody ever says I have good makeup, but once in a while someone will envy my good skin, it looks that natural. It doesn't cake and I don't feel sealed in. It's kind of expensive at $25 or so, but to me, worth the price.

(I'm also sold on higher-end eyeliner, after a lifetime of drugstore brands. Why didn't I find out this stuff sooner?)

Maryn, I'm going to print out your post and take it with me to Ulta. I have such a makeup denial/amnesia/ignorance thing that I'd probably forget what you said and try to pull it up on my phone and of course I wouldn't have good service there and I'd have a mini meltdown over my lack of understanding the basics of girl stuff. The erase stuff - the Ulta site shows only 3 color choices, fair-medium-deep. Not sure if I'd be fair or medium. I have a slight olive tone, so pinky stuff doesn't work well.

I opened an Ulta account back in January when I was going in for my first job interview in 7 years ... that's when the sales clerks, all in early 20s, scared the heck out of me by their made-up-ness. The one who was helping me said she didn't spend much time on her morning routine, "only about an hour or so," and that freaked me out. I'm definitely looking for a 5-minute-max routine.

I'd really like to have my eyebrows permanently plucked. I have some hairs that grow all the way down to my brow bone, just above the lids. I must have looked like a little monkey girl before I started plucking in my teens. I was in the hospital for 2 weeks a few years ago and when I got home and feeling up to looking at my mirror, I was shocked by the number of strays that had grown in. Dark, too, so obvious. I don't think laser would be good, that close to my eyes, but maybe - ?

As I've gotten older my underarm and leg hair has decreased to the point that I rarely shave. I've never had hairy forearms. But the facial hair has increased.

I'm part girly girl, part tomboy. I have a cabinet full of jewelry and make-up and I love, love, love shopping for bags and shoes. On the other hand I can sit in a room and watch sports all day and be content to be in sweats without makeup. I used to go every other week to get acrylic nails done but have been able to maintain my own nails lately, and on occasion I do take the time to paint them. Though I am not good at it. Recently I started going back to get my hair colored and I pay way too much money in skin care products.

On the other hand I can sit around and watch sports all day in sweat pants and go out without makeup or jewelry. I have 18 tattoos and only one of them can be considered feminine. And it is barely that. Yes there's hearts and vines and a flower but the skull in the middle of it renders it less so.

I know what you mean about the staff at Ulta, juniper. They don't look like humans to me. The Kid (my adult daughter) and I wonder if the store requires that look. It's certainly off-putting to people like me who are going for a natural look only with the many imperfections minimized. Doing all the makeup I do for the fanciest of occasions takes me maybe 10-15 minutes, and that's waiting for mascara to dry between coats.

I use an Erase Paste that is way lighter than my skin. It lightens whatever I'm putting it on, providing a pretty good base for the foundation I put over it. So any shade that matches or is lighter than your skin should be fine.

Am I part tomboy for being content in sweats, playing video games, and sometimes leaving without make-up too? I used to play with boys a lot, too. I get along with them better too.

I think.

You are whatever you'd like to call yourself. I have said, often, that I relate better to 15-year-old boys than I do anyone else. Just by the fact that I read Batman comics and watch sports and write sex stories and have tattoos and like cool cars. But that's very gender biased of me. When I am asked to classify myself by society I use tomboy. Otherwise I'm just, me. :)

ETA: I realize the quoted post (mine above in Miss Strawberrii's post) and the one I posted she quoted from are terribly written. I fixed it and then my computer freaked out and I lost everything and just noticed the edits were never fixed. I promise I know how to write better than that...

One thing I notice, when I'm stressed or miserable my mind wants to go to fingernail polish or something else that's "surface."
.

Hey, just discovered this thread! This is well said fruitbat, and that is me to a T. Until I hit about 30 years old, I was never a girly girl. But as a working mom, during my downtimes at a very stressful job(pediatric social worker) I discovered a website makeupally, and for some reason I was drawn to it. It was a "fun" place to get away from the heartbreak and stress of my job. Soon I was "into" makeup, and hairproducts and fashion.

Ten years later, I still pop in there for some down time, and along the way I have discovered tons about beauty type stuff. As a tomboy type raised by a tomboy type mother, I had NO idea about makeup or fashion or anything. And you know what, it's fun. Not the be all end all of living, but adds a very nice diversion to this crazy world we live in.

I have tried TONS of different stuff over the years ( I mean TONS) I know about high end makeup and low end mu and I have my favorites.

The me of today (40's) likes a simple natural look. I have less than a 5 minute face. For those interested:

1. I wear tinted moisturizer ( nars) but love the Laura mercier one as well. This is $40. I have tried tons of other stuff looking for cheaper dupes, but wasted time and money doing that. Go to a nice makeup counter and get SAMPLES. try them each for a week or so. Do not be intimidated by the makeup counter people. if you need encouragement tell yourself its for story research. I believe its good to do stuff out of your comfort zone. You grow and learn and it can help in your writing :)

2. I like to use eyeliner, but I tightline ( google, it takes a second to learn) a black or dark brown or khaki is nice ( I have dark brown eyes).

3. mascara: ive tried expensive and drugstore and was just as happy with drugstore, I love the loreal voluminous,

4. I gave up on eyeshadow for everyday ( for fancy nights out which for me are 3x a year, lol I use a bronzy eyeshadow stick from laura mercier.) I do like to put a skin colored eye base on my eyelids to hide the redness on my lids and make me look wide awake. currently using something from tarte, but may go even more minimal and not repurchase

5. I love lipstick but forget to put it on I most days. but I still love the idea of it and wish I was one of those people that comfortably wore red lipstick all the time and rocked it. the reality is, just some lipbalm or one of those Revlon lipbutters ( pink truffle is nice) I have tried so many lip products, high end and drug store. anything with a scent is gross for me. High end I like nars and bobbi brown but my lack of use and difficulty telling them apart from a Revlon lipstick once on has me just owning one or 2 Revlon lipsticks and putting them on when I remember....

so my thing is to even out skin tone ( tinted moisturizer), define eyes but not over the top with an eyeliner ( dark brown tight lined) and MASCARA , and a little color on the lips. makes one look more polished and confident. You are wearing the makeup to enhance your own natural beauty , the makeup is not wearing you.

looking forward to coming here for some down time!

I used to be considered a tomboy. Hm.

I've pretty much always been considered a tomboy. Even when I was a kid my fav shirt had a helicopter on it and I was oddly fascinated with dinosaurs and volcanoes. Now I wear baggy batman hoodies, play first person shooters, and am studying computer science. Not that I really care. I think I'm awesome :D
My sister did make me put on eyeliner and mascara the other day. I will admit, it was kinda fun. Then she made me do it myself and it was a total disaster XD
But how the heck do girls put eyeliner on their upper eyelid without crying?!? (No seriously, I really wanna know.)

I've also been thinking of dying my hair blue because I want to know what it looks like and why the heck not. I keep my hair short, so if it turns out to be a disaster I can just wear a hat for a few weeks and just have it cut again. (I also have an agreement with a friend of mine where he will dye his hair red if I dye mine blue so that's just another reason to do it)
Anyone got any advice/experience to share with that?

Will do Maryn. I think my passport is good for another couple of years, however I just got my driver's licence renewed and I wasn't allowed to smile. The guy only took one photo and I didn't see it before he sent it off - but I know already it wasn't good. I don't look great in pictures anyway but really, why is looking like an escapee necessary for those official documents? If I ever get stopped, I'm going to be clapped in irons before I can say "sorry officer I didn't see the speed limit" and I'll be sent to moulder in the hoosegow, just because I look like I shouldn't be out and about - let alone driving.
