I posted this link in a thread in Story Research but I figured it ought to go here, too.

The Historical Thesarus of English is an enormous on-line resource that will give you alternate words, with their origin and dates, for words you enter into the search.

They were exhibiting their web site at the World Science Fiction convention last month and I thought it would be useful for folks here.

Enjoy!

Sweet! The online Oxford English Dictionary has a similar wondeful thesaurus, but it isn't free, and unless you're affiliated with a library that subscribes to it, it's not really accessible. This looks like a great free resource.

Thanks for this. Wow, what a useful site! Wish I'd known of it before I wrote my historical novel. But no matter, I'll be sure to use it for my next one. Many thanks.
