Basically they had a breach in 2011 they they've only recently discovered.

  • No book data or financial information was taken, lost or changed, the hackers did take email addresses and encrypted password hashes for some accounts created prior to that date.
  • All LibraryThing members who joined prior to June 19th, 2011 have been converted to full lifetime accounts.
  • They're asking everyone to reset passwords.

The lifetime account bump is nice of them, but it bothers me that they only discovered this breach three years after it happened. It feels like such a long time. I suspect I'm just being oblivious to all the work required to keep a large website secure, though.

On the plus side it brought my attention back to their site (which has been nicely redesigned since I last visited).
