I haven't completed my WIP yet, but for the first time in my life, I've broken the 100,000 word mark of a draft.

I'd say I'm still about 60K away from completion, then hope to whittle the draft down to 110K during revisions, but for now, I'm just happy I've persevered long enough to get the word count up to six figures.

This concludes my transmission...

Congratulations, alldis! My first completed manuscript clocked in at over 112,000 words, so I can appreciate the effort you're putting into your work. Best of luck.

Good for you! That's a full tenth of a million words, you know, and they say (whoever "they" might be) that you get about as good as you're going to by the millionth original word. You're making excellent progress.

Maryn, pleased for you

Thanks all, for the kind words.

@maryn
A million words, eh?
I wrote a 93K fantasy in 2003 (which was abysmal) and have had several other stories stall around 40 - 50K, so I think I'm hovering around 400,000 in total. Good to know I've got a ways to go before a million because I'm sure I've still got a mess of improving to do.

CGs on the milestone! You sound like a "long" writer like me. I'll typically finish a first draft about a third longer than the finished product.

Better too much than too little, I say. ;)

I agree. :)
For myself, it's far easier to trim the fat than add the flavour.
