Write something that has a strong market with publishers/magazines looking for it.

I submitted to F & SF originally because I had a novelette-length story and I couldn't think of anywhere else to send it. That was rejected but came back with a handwritten comment "strong writing, please send more". So I did. And she took that next one - my fourth story sale ever, and my first in the SF/F/H genre.
Another thing to add is that editors like discovering writers. That writer could be you.
