I'm a disability analyst at a law firm. I'm the one a client talks to when they want our free consultation. It's my job to listen to their story and determine if they've got a good case for Social Security disability. It's brain intensive and can be emotionally taxing a lot of the time. Sometimes I've got folks on my line who I know are disabled, but they just don't have the evidence to back it up, so we can't prove it. It's difficult to tell them that I can't help. I have frazzled moms calling at the end of their ropes with special needs kids, disabled steel workers who have struggled with bad knees for decades and just can't do it anymore, people with fatal illnesses who can't afford their medical care because they can't work and can't get state insurance. Indiana was the second state to pass the "work requirement" in order to qualify for Medicaid. Disabled folks are exempt from the work requirement, but while they are applying for disability (a 2 year process) they aren't allowed to work. Now Indiana has taken their insurance. But you have to have medical treatment in order to have the evidence that you are disabled. If you aren't getting treatment, you get denied for disability. But they can't get treatment anymore, because they can't work while applying (or they get denied) and now can't have insurance if they aren't working. It's a terrible spot to be in. There are a lot of tears and frustrations from my clients during my day to day. It's my job to listen and help the best that I can.
