In my own little world but its ok, they know me he
So I'm just wondering on someone else's behalf any good sites for posing works of fiction for people to just read (critique and comments welcome but more interested in just finding an audience.)

She's writing some dark urban fantasy, adult content but not porn or erotica- some sex but more violence, and longer work- first chapter, for example is 37,000 words but broken into four sub-chapters. Looking for a place where people's comments are likely to consist of more than "that's too long I can't read it!"

Also, somewhere that people will see a description, understand that there's violence in the story and not whine because they weren't Pre-warned about every little detail that makes them personally uncomfortable.

Any good suggestions?

It sounds like you're asking which of the many display sites are good.

To be honest, none of them will do much to attract readers for your friend's works.

Self or trade publishing, with associated effective marketing efforts, are a much better way to proceed.

You can try Writing dot Com. It is not an easy place to figure out, but there are groups diesigned to work as critique circles. They have a rating system they enforce, and there is nothing too extreme for the place, as long as it is rated correctly. WDC promotes reviewing, and she can post requests to various lists asking for reviews. There are some very knowledgeable writers there.

Some Wattpad have had success: but the numbers of reads it claims are hugely exaggerated because it includes spiders and webcrawler thingies in its accounting.

There's a thread in BR&BC for Wattpad, which explains this.

A better metric for wattpad is the number of comments on each piece - it gives you a more realistic assessment of engagement.

PS: Wattpad is very teen-oriented (as is Movellas.)

Does anyone here have any recent experience with Trigger Street Labs? I posted a short story there about 3 years ago and got some good feedback. I haven't used it recently, though. But I would definitely consider posting work there if you're looking for feedback, although I'm not sure what the maximum length of a short story is. The story I have posted there is only about 7,000 words.

I tried bookstack reviews. I emailed a simple ebook file made of my novel, got no response. Apparently you have to have the EXACT format/layout/design/guideline to their EXACT specifications before they will even consider to read your work.

Personally I think they're playing favorites, but you could give them a try.

I wonder if FictionPress.com would be helpful. It has a chapter serial format, which might be particularly useful if the book's not done yet.

Just echoing others suggestions about Wattpad. I haven't experimented with it myself but it seems very teen oriented.

Worthyofpublishing.com is ok but I especially love Figment.com. If you want friendly and serious readers, I highly recommend that site. It is user-friendly where you can easily edit and view your works. Plus, it has less people, so your work has a higher chance of getting read seriously.

An alternative interpretation might read,

Plus, it has less people, so your work has a lower chance of getting read.

Or,

Plus, it has less people, so your work has a lower chance of getting read by someone who knows what they're talking about.

I've posted stuff on wattpad. It was a nice way to have a location to send people to who were interested in my work, although I thin they have to sign up to join it. The frustrating thing about Wattpad is that people will post "joke" work and then people will leave tons of sarcastic comments about how great it is. There is some good work on there and if you find the right people to interact with you can get some feedback from it. Hubpages has a fiction community/section, but it'd have to be posted one short article at a time more than 1000 words lowers the amount of hits you'll get, but I've gotten some feedback there as well. Was a great place to also tell people who were interested about it because anyone can view it. Not sure if that's as good of an option or not though.

I've heard some great things about FictionPress.com but it still terrifies me a little. Have you had good experiences there, KingAlanI? Anyone else?

Critters.org would be perfect for her. I used to belong to it. It's a good site.

I used to read stuff on FictionPress all the time, and I posted a few short stories, which had a good response, though nothing dramatic. I was thinking of suggesting FictionPress as well--I don't know about nowadays, but at least formerly it was quite active. A 37,000 word first chapter is definitely on the long side, but if it can be broken up (and possibly posted) as four sub-chapters, that would probably have a better chance. I didn't read it while it was on there, or at least I didn't finish it, but Sarah J. Maas's Queen of Glass I remember having at least 50 chapters on FP, and that got a huge audience.

Otherwise, though, I've generally thought that FP has more mature work than Wattpad (although it also has a lot of teen romance stuff, which I happen to like as long as it's well-written).

Wattpad is for everyone--and gets you read, too

Actually, Wattpad is for everyone--I'll link you to my HuffPo piece about that and let everyone decide for themselves. It has led to my being asked to serialize elsewhere, and some very big book and movie deals have been made there as well--if you care about that sort of thing.

I often write very adult material (graphic violence and sex), so I've never bothered to post on Wattpad. If I start publishing more mainstream epic fantasy work, I might get a Wattpad account for excerpts.

For free fan fiction and original fiction pieces, I post on Archive of Our Own, a large invitation-only fan fiction site. The quality of authors and readers varies widely, but I've had lively discussions and some world-class reads there.

In the year since I've started posting more recent pieces, I've seen a number of fan readers go to my blog, and from there to my commercially published original fiction. So it's not only worth it for the fun, but as passive marketing.

Huh, hadn't heard of it. But as my current self-pub plan is to give away the first book in my never-ending Epic, ie. treat it as "free samples" -- maybe this would be a good place to offer it.

It's a hot site right now, and I love the community there. It's not just for teens, and lots of other sites are starting to partner with it as well. Several of the writers have scored big movie, TV and publishing deals of late--one writer just posted about being featured on NBC and then pursued relentlessly by agents and publishers. His book is now published in many countries and doing extremely well. So I recommend it--just remember to be prudent about how much of your book you offer up. Some go for the whole thing, which can be great if they offer to "feature" it. But some agents and publishers are skittish about that. Might be worth the risk, though.

I thought that site was mostly for screenplays.

writingforums dot org is a decent site. It's not overly busy but you can get decent quality feedback for the work you post there.
