Reminds me of a time a friend and I were riding, 40+ years ago in Tucson. We would go Friday after classes to a local dude stable attached to one of the resorts. After a few times they decided we knew what we were doing and just let us take our horses and go, without an escort.
All the roads were dirt, and there was almost no traffic. We're going a little faster than a lope, but not a full out gallop. Up a slightly inclined road. At the top was a T intersection. I knew I wouldn't be able to make the turn, so I slowed down a little, she didn't. She didn't make the turn, went straight across into natural desert. Her horse then planted his feet and came to a full stop. She continued over the withers. As she is falling off, she realizes she will land face first in a cholla cactus. Somehow she stayed on. We still laugh about it.
