Here is a link to an in-depth cryptic crossword solving guide.

Here is a link demonstrating my competency as a crossword setter.

Here is a crossword grid.

Here are some clues:

Here is some information:

Please feel free to complete the crossword by posting answers in this thread. I will endeavour to update the O.P grid and respond to answers at least twice daily.

I have attempted to follow Ximenes-ish rules. And when I say -ish, I mean ISH. Really it's more of an Libertarian style on account of my amateurism and lack of skill. Be aware I done me best, and me best (at this point) may not be good enough.

That said, the crossword should be easyish to complete. I have used a proper grid with a decent amount of intersecting squares, though you may be hindered by my poorly constructed clues.

Here are some guidelines:

*Try to have fun.

*Work together or on your own.

*Bemoan the clues.

*It's encouraged (but not necessary) to parse the clues when answering. This will help me learn where I am going wrong/right.

*Discussion of clue construction is also encouraged.

*I may bump the thread occasionally if it drops off the radar, but I will let it die if no-one gives it a crack after 7 days.

*Try to have fun.

Here is a plea:

Don't shout at me too much when you find I've messed something up. Tell me where I went wrong.

Here is where you take over:

Good luck :)

Why, Mccardey, you done made me blush -- but I still think you should hold the love until you realize how bad me clues are. :)

Well, Mccardey, in the words of the incomparable Bryan Adams: every crossword I do, I do it for you. :)

Is 8 down "too" rather than "bag"? You have to take the "bag" out of "Tobago" giving you "also"?

Is 23 down "lance corporal"? My reasoning might be really stupid so I'll wait to hear if it's the answer before I share. :tongue

I love cryptic crosswords. :D :D :D

You are not wrong!

Boom! I'm good today. The fact that it was two words tipped me off that it was a military rank. Cracked me up when I realised the drug-taking was about Lance Armstrong. :tongue

14 across, "contralto", husky female (singer), from "con", criminal, and an anagram (melted down) of "art lot".

Gin is important, but not part of the answer.

Damn batteries! I'm sure they'll be some clues left for you Mccardey, if not, I can always write you another one special. :)

OK - 1 down will be "tonic" (it's a shot in the arm and it makes gin more palatable) and I'm debating whether 28 down is "shun"? 1 across is starting to look like "test pilot", which makes 4 down "left luggage office"?

I'll stop, I'll stop ... :tongue
