First, an off topic bit of advice when replying to posts. You can quote multiple posts using the + button next to the "quote" button. It's a feature I don't see on every message board, so it's easy for people to miss.

I am truly, honestly not getting where I am being offensive. If you read my Facebook posts, then you would see my truly offensive side. I co-edit several zines, and we always have a great time, cracking jokes, dissecting submissions, razzing each other, unleashing our sarcasm. It's all good fun. No hard feelings. My colleagues there are all writers. Maybe I have some sort of mild learning/communication disability. Feel free to treat me as you would someone with a disability. (I have a feeling I'll get slapped on the wrist for saying that too.)
If I sauntered onto a LGBT message board where no one knew me from Adam/Eve and declared some gays are just so sensitive and see perceived threats everywhere I'd get a smackdown. And I'd deserve it. Furthermore, my behavior among friends and those who know me is not how I behave among everyone. I may make crass jokes with close friends, but I'd never say such things to complete strangers. It's rude, and how you behave somewhere else has no bearing on how you ought to behave here.

For emphasis I'm going to quote a couple of people:

My youngest son has an extreme form of a learning and communication disability. I treat him in just the same way as I treat my other son: with respect and love. And I find your flippancy about this particular topic hugely offensive.

ETA: Oh, and speaking as someone with several physical disabilities, yes, your glib comment about treating you with kid-gloves because, what, you don't know how to be civil? Not winning you any points. You're "Oh dear how am I possibly being offensive, oh mercy me! I just don't understand!" stance smacks of playing dumb to me. You know what you said. You're a writer, words have meaning, text has tone. Re-evaluate, or step away from the keyboard because you are seriously not doing yourself any favours.
To be honest, I think you know you're behaving poorly and are feigning ignorance.

So any recent (or other) experiences with this press? I've been researching small presses that publish novels similar to my MS and keep coming across this press. The editing issue is a concern for me.

I recently submitted the first three chapters of my time-travel novel to Fireship and had a request for a complete MS. They got back to me shortly after with a detailed review, stating that they weren't interested. Most of their reasons were fair, but one thing that amused me was that they said there were too many long, obscure words and they'd had to look some up in the dictionary! I honestly don't think I'd gone over-the-top with my word choices and it just seemed like a bizarre thing to put in a rejection e-mail.

Did they give any instances of the words they found long and obscure?

(I know this may seem like a derail, but it also gives insight into the tastes of the publisher and might help other authors decide whether or not to submit to them.)

No, they didn't give any examples. I've been racking my brain but I really can't think which words they might be referring to!

Since they specialise in historical fiction I would have assumed that they'd appreciate the need to use old-fashioned language appropriate to the setting.

Bear in mind that there has been a complete change of staff in the last year. The team that set up Fireship and took it forward when the founder died is long gone, so the historical interest and expertise may not be there either.

To be honest, I'd say you had a lucky escape. I would not recommend.

Seeking Information on Fireship Press

First of all, I am a newbie, so I hope I am posting this in the correct place. If not, please correct me, with useful information.

Second, I know that there is another thread about Fireship Press, but that was placed a few years ago, and I see that the information on their website has changed since then.

Third, and this is where my question is: does anyone out there have any experience with Fireship Press? They seem to be legitimate, but I would like any information that anyone would like to share.

I ask because they are currently reading a seafaring novel that I submitted, and I would like to have as much information as possible.

Thank you very much.

NOTE: I posted this in the Newbies forum, and believe that I needed to repost in the Bewares forum...which is what I just did. :(

I don't have any information about Fireship Press, but general etiquette for this forum is to add any comments to the already existing thread: Fireship Press

One reason to do this is that often people will follow threads, and if there's someone who is following Fireship Press, they won't see your new thread on the press and therefore won't be able to share their knowledge with you.

I'm sure a mod will come along shortly to merge the two threads.
