After a short battle with cancer, Ms Mahy passed away yesterday.
One of New Zealand's greatest ever writers and one of the pioneers of children's literature in general.

I just loved her. She wrote such beautiful short stories and her children's stories and poetry (in particular Bubble Trouble, which might be my favourite poem to read out loud ever) were so cheerful and lively. I grew up with them.

I just don't have the words.

Thank you and RIP, Ms Mahy.

Thanks for posting this, lastlittlebird.

It's hard to imagine the NZ literature scene without her. She was a treasure, and her books always will be. Her YA novel, The Changeover, is my favourite.

Home - but for how long?
And...

Americans should know her work as Mahy was first published by an American publisher.

She was a master wordsmith and her imagination was quite out of this world. She gave so much to children and I'm glad her earliest books are being republished by Penguin.
