Note: Research, and interview any service provider. Ask for references. In his 2013 Book Publishing Industry Predictions, Smashwords founder Mark Coker included this warning for aspiring writers: “In the self-publishing gold rush, more money will be made in author services than in book sales" (Galley Cat).

See Writer Beware on Vetting Independent Editors and appropriate fees for freelance editors. See especially Editors and Editing from SFWA.

There's a useful guest post on Writer Beware from editor Katherine Pickett on Author-Editor Compatibility: The Crucial Element for a Successful Editing Experience. It's important to find the right editor for you and your book.

See [Publishing Services] What should I ask a prospective copy editor?

Consider also letting the ms. sit for a while and reading a few really helpful books about self-editing:

Renni Browne and Dave King. Self-Editing for Fiction Writers: How to Edit Yourself Into Print. (AW Amazon affiiate link)

Noah Lukeman. The First Five Pages: A Writer's Guide to Staying Out of the Rejection Pile. (AW Amazon affiliate link)
