I'm putting this in the W1S1 thread because a) I like you guys and b) anyone here is obviously dedicated to the dream.
What is your ultimate goal in writing fiction? I don't mean as in "famous novelist." That's sort of a given. I'm referring more to short-long-term goals, maybe a year or two years from now.
I only started six months ago. For me, my goal for this year is to have at least five stories published in reputable markets and be a member of the HWA. I've sold two so three to go. Then next year (or this year if I overachieve), when I hit eight or ten well-received stories in well-received, memorable markets, I plan to start my novel. I suppose the short way of saying it is this: I ultimately want my name to be known, in however small a circle, and then build momentum from there all the way to success, in which I eventually at least earn a third of my income through fiction.
I know this is a pretty thin topic. It's easy just to say "I want to publish a bunch of stories!" Or "I write just to write; that's success enough." All fair answers, of course. My own response is fairly "duh." But I was curious about what you all would have to say.
