The alternate sounds nice too though:
Lamenting his fate, the poet sighed.
The mirror shattered and worlds collided.
(When I shared this with my writing group the teacher thought it was about an alien planet colliding with Earth, but some boy explained to her it was about the mirror world colliding with our world)
