I was watching Modern Family the other day and in this episode a group of gay friends commented about their first crushes and it really got me thinking that I couldn't remember my first one, I tend to think about my past the littlest the possible because I hate that pedantic friendless little stutterer that I was.

After some thought, I remembered this (female) biology professor I had when I was 14. She was really touchy but only with me and another boy. He was a bit older than me and had this nice and slim footballer body. I remember thinking being with both of them. Then I started to think about them separately... mmm....

Then just recently remembered about how much Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time meant to me and how I discovered when I was 12 years old fanfiction and with that, slashfic. Especially between Link and Sheik.

You see, in the game Princess Zelda takes the guise of masculine Sheik and the duality between Sheik and Zelda, both masculine and feminine living in one body, no, being one, really left me an impression.

Heck, now that I think about, some of my fetishes came from roaming about fan fiction when I was 12. That feels somewhat sad...

So, any interesting story to tell around?

Gillian Anderson, AKA Agent Scully from X-Files. Everyone else fancied Mulder. It took me a while to realise that not only was I not interested in Mulder, but actually, Scully was pretty damn hot (Krycek too, but that's a different story.) I think I was 13 at the time.

After that...*points at avatar* Shirley Manson from Garbage. I guess I've always had a thing for redheaded women.

My first crush on a guy was on the guy I'm in love with now... Except I was only three back then. No joke. :tongue

My first crush on a girl was awkward... She liked me, she didn't know I liked her, and then she was dating my ex-boyfriend... Ouch.

Nice, didn't recognized her. I discovered her and Garbage while reading about androgyny and stumbling upon the single of the same name.

First ever crush on a girl?

Elle McPherson. This was probably in the early 90s, when she was quite popular in the media. I remember pinching mum's old magazines and cutting out pictures of Elle, and hiding them in my room. So sad that my family never discusses healthy attraction... I felt like I was doing something wrong by admiring her beauty.

Then shortly thereafter, I remember one girl in my primary school class. I was good at maths and running, and so was she.

One day the class was playing this game, where the teacher says 2 numbers, and you have to yell out the answer of them multiplied together, followed by Bang! (Don't ask me why we had to say Bang!...)

Anyway, I had never lost a game, and this particular day it was just me and this girl, and I suddenly realised that not only was she a good runner, but she was good at maths as well. I was struck dead silent and staring because I was having my first, "Hey, we should date!" sort of thoughts. Consequently I didn't even hear the teacher say the 2 numbers, and lost the game.

I eventually danced with her at our leaving-primary-school dance thing. One slow dance. It was good, but she didn't really want to dance with me - I had to persuade her. :(

Of course, back then I didn't know I was trans.

And if you want to get technical, I've had 2 guy crushes as well. Sort of.

1 was a musician I knew who was really nice to me. That crush was about the sort of lifestyle we might have together, not about his body. (Though he was pseudo-gothic, which was nice.)

The other was a fellow student of mine in a free entry course thing. He looked very feminine, and I was attracted to his principles. He seemed to either be an ally of QUILTBAG folks, or perhaps a trans girl or gay man himself. It never really came up in conversation though.

Both guys, I haven't really been attracted to their bodies.

I was an insufferable Teacher's Pet in the sixth grade and I realized years later it was because I was horribly crushed out on my teacher. This was '76-'77, so I was about 12 at the time. He had everything that trips my trigger even now: longer hair, a redhead, a deep, sexy voice, and a pornstar/donut duster mustache. Man, I was hopelessly infatuated with the guy.

My first crush on a girl was basically just like this. Except that eventually we got it figured out and we dated. But the part when she was dating my ex was awful. It broke my heart every time I saw them together.

I hate to be a downer, but here it goes:

My first crush was on a boy who was in my P.E. class in the eighth grade. However, I didn't realize I had a crush on him until after he died in the fall of my freshman year of high school (injuries sustained in a car crash, after being in a coma for a couple days). When he died, I donated a decent amount of money toward his funeral fund and missed the bus to donate even more. As a result, I had to stand outside in the rain waiting for my parents to realize I didn't come home on the bus and drive over to my high school to pick me up.

Eighth/ninth grade was the year I was discovering my sexuality, so I hadn't realized that what I felt for him was a teenage crush until after he was already dead and after I had reacted very strongly to his death. It wasn't as if I knew him very well. It was probably only several weeks later that I decided I must have had some sort of crush on him.

A boy named Peter, who was in the Graeco-Roman wrestling club at my school. This was when I was 13. I'd just started Year 7 (which in Sweden is 13-14 y/o). I had such a huge crush on him that there was no way I could rationalise it as anything but such. I knew I'd been let's say 'interested' in guys before, but I'd always managed to think of it in terms of 'wanting to be mates' because he was 'good at sports' or 'he was funny'.

But I was really into that guy, and spent about three months feeling utterly miserable because self-preservation told me I couldn't do anything, because feeling that was was so wrong. Yet, of course I did things, even though he took little interest in me.

I... don't know if I have an answer to this one.

I've never been good at crushes in the traditional sense, my feelings have always been a lot closer to admiration than want.

There was a guy, a sixth grader, who I really admired when I was in fifth grade. I guess that was sort of my first crush? I didn't want to date him or anything, I just wanted... I wanted his regard.

My first crush on a female, which was a lot closer to a true crush, was on a fictional character. Haruka from Sailor Moon, actually. And, again, a lot of that was admiration.

I guess I've always sort of been that way. And sometimes, I find it stressful. I don't understand a lot of romantic subplots in books, because I don't do the lusting after a person thing. Maybe that's why my own stories often suffer in the romance department.

I am very familiar with the duality of masculine and feminine dwelling in the same body. I suspect its way more common that we think, and hence, its ripe for a book to explore

Errr - would you like to unpack that a bit, please, Rhonda? It seems rather peripheral for a thread about peoples' first crushes.

My first crush on a boy was on Robin in that old 1960s Batman show. I was three or four. I would make-believe going on dates with him. My first real crush on a guy who actually existed and whom I knew was when I was about eleven, on my twenty-something art teacher. I wrote embarrassing poems about him.

My first crush on a girl was when I was thirteen. Prior to that, I'd thought occasionally about whether I might be attracted to girls, but I'd decided that I wasn't because I hadn't had crushes on any. In retrospect, I don't know if that's accurate or not. I'd been very infatuated with some girls, but I interpreted it differently than when I'd been infatuated with boys. And I know I found Kate Winslet attractive when I saw Titanic at around nine or so, but I didn't really understand it.

But when I was thirteen, I had this casual friend. I felt very drawn to her even though I didn't actually know her that well. She was the target of bullying, and there were rumors going around about her that she found very hurtful, one of which was that she was a lesbian. I felt terrible for her, but I also felt a little disappointed when she denied the rumors. I didn't understand why at first. But when I thought about it, I realized that the idea she might be gay had given me some hope that she could like me the way that I liked her. I felt bad for feeling that way, because I knew it was a source of discomfort for her, but I was also completely infatuated.

That blew my mind back in the day. Sheik rules.

First crush ever: Noah Hathaway as Atreyu in "The Neverending Story."

First crush on another female: nobody laugh but....Britney Spears. I know, I know, don't judge me.

Actually, I had a huge crush on Britney Spears when I was a teenager and she came out with Hit Me Baby (One More Time).

I was still in high school, so the super-sexual video set in a school really appealed to me.

Then I noticed that her music was kind of... Unpalatable earwise (for me at least). And the sort of fans she attracted were soooo opposite to me in my general nature. So I don't give her much thought nowadays.

But crikey, that song came out when I was 15 or 16, and I'm 27 now. She's been around a long time! Props for that.

As for unattainable crushes, I totally agree with the Gillian Anderson sentiment... And even though I thought Sheik was cool, I was more impressed when Link grew up in OoT. Suffice to say, 'twas fun making him climb the ladders.

I hazz this gay friend. So I know ezzactly what you mean.

My older cousin's best friend. I don't even know what I was thinking with that one. Past me had no taste. What is it -- always the thing you can't have you want the most? Something like that.

Skin from Skunk Anansi. Mmmm that woman could belt out a tune.

And erm... RiffRaff, from Rocky Horror.

And Odo from DS9, for obvious reasons.

My mum maintains I had a very early crush on Timmy Mallet, but I tell you that is a LIE.

A girl and a boy in grade school, roughly around the same time to the point where I can't remember which was first.

I had no idea what it was though, only in retrospect :p

Leonardo Dicaprio in Growing Pains when I was five years old. I guess I didn't know it then, of course but I know it now. Also I will say, for a video game character, Link was particularly sexy as well. :p

My first crush on a girl was in elementary school. I remember she had gorgeous long hair that dazzled in the sunlight.

My first crush on a boy was in high school. He was a cute Asian, but unfortunately I wasn't his type.

I don't remembered being shocked by the Sheik reveal at the end of OoT.
