Books take us to the future and to the past. We go exploring in jungles or dance a waltz with a prince at midnight.

So where have books taken you?

My favorite places I have been are:

Orchard House and 19th century Massacachusetts in Little Women

The Court of King Henry VII amd Elizabeth of York in The King's Grace

Hogwarts in the Harry Potter series

Narnia in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

The North Pole in The Polar Express

The Court of King Henry VIII in numerous books by Philipa Gregory

Out side the beltway...
Where have I been?

To the Moon and Mars with Edgar Rice Burroughs,
aboard the Nautilus with HG Wells,
to distant solar systems with any number of SF writers,
including a world called Pern where I have ridden dragons and fought thread.

But my journeys have also been earth bound as Shakespeare has taken me to Florence and other writers have taken me on dark journeys in the minds of killers, rapist, child molesters, and to war, lots of wars of many generations.

While I have not always enjoyed the journeys, I do continue to take them and marvel at the talent of my fellow writers...

One of the most recent experiences had to do with a tiger on a European mountain :) That was an experience I don't know that I would've conjured up myself, but it was very cool.

My earliest memory of really going somewhere different in a book was the mitochondria in A Wind in the Door.

I've been to Chicago, but it was over-run with vampires and wizards.

I've been to Venice, and it had vampires too.

I've been to Diskworld, but I liked the vampires there. They're interested in photography. Or at least Otto was.

I've been to Seattle and Budapest and Hong Kong--and there's always a damned vampire somewhere.

I'm totally writing a novel about a vampire in Budapest  Kinda. Vampire's not really the right word. It's a folkloric thing.

It's really just an excuse to be in Budapest ;) :) Budapest rocks.

The exact centre of all of existence
I've been to Middle Earth several times, Discworld quite a bit, the entire Universe with Douglas Adams, loads of real cities overrun with vampires and witches and stuff, the past with Richard Dawkins and Bill Bryson, the pure world of mathematical form with loads of science writers, all over the Forgotten Realms thanks to R.A. Salvatore, and a good many other places.

Strangely, the books that take a lot of time to describe the scenery don't stick out in my mind - it's the fabulous characters that make me remember places.
