Another vote for "lost"--although going with a cliche like this may not be the best for exposition. Fine for dialogue, if that's how your character would express it.

Thanks all. Maryn, wise words. It is for dialogue, but I'm not sure I like the phrase after discovering that both 'loss' and 'lost' have been used anyway. :O)
