How old is AW? When did it first go online?

I've seen a couple of zombie threads where the posts were from 2004 or so. Is that the earliest?

The domain was first registered in 1999.

The boards go back to 2002 or 3 on Easy Board (mostly lost content now); and 2004 on vBulletin.

Some of the paid version of Easy Board content was imported in 2004; you'll see familiar and still active handles/user names on posts with "Guest Post" as a User Title.

I'd heard of Absolute Write from time to time- and now that I'm actually getting serious about writing, I'm joining- but it surprises me to know it goes back that far. In Internet terms, this site is almost impossibly ancient- a mighty oak in a forest of pines. The only sites I can think of with half as much longevity are Google and Fanfiction.net.

Oh, EzBoard, the home where I spent most of my pre-teen years. I had no idea AW was on it back then! I was mostly in for the Harry Potter RPGs and a certain poetry board. :D

Gee, what's that make me? My domain`s whois info shows:
Creation Date: 1997-12-03T05:00:00Z

I just had a birthday, and I don't care for “impossibly ancient”.

Because it really is possible to be that ancient?

"Impossibly ancient" - a phrase only used by people not old enough to remember when there was no such thing as the internet, let alone message boards :)

Few are the records from those dark times. One can only imagine how the people lived back then.

Good point.
I suppose we should call such people “wet behind the ears” in response.

Daisy wheel printers, huge numbers of printer ribbons, reams and reams of paper, massive numbers of brown paper envelopes, stamps, International Reply Coupons and hours at a time spent in post office queues.

If you wanted to buy something from the small ads at the back of magazines - no website to check them out, you sent a letter asking for info, they sent you a brochure and pricelist (frequently you decided not to buy, so everybody's time and money wasted). If you did decide to buy - no Paypal, do you send cheque or money-order? Again, slow and tedious.
Hurray for the modern era where you can buy an e-book online, pay automatically, and be reading in 10 minutes!

Why, six years ago I was a sweet young thing.

Oh, wait. No I wasn't. I was never sweet.
