I'm not sure why I haven't given them much thought. I notice that they have killer artwork on their covers. I seem to lean towards authors in bigger houses by nature.

Has anyone read any of their books? Are they as good as they look?

Anyone here ever work with them? They look like a nice mid-sized pub.

Just curious.

The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie comes to mind. Book one of The First Law(?)
I highly recommend this book. Nicely written, with sympathetic and interesting, fully developed characters.
I've enjoyed several PYR books. They are on my short list of dream publishers, but I still need an agent(yes PYR takes un-agented subs, I've subbed Rene Sears once and have been rejected).

Yep, I'm a big fan of Ian McDonald, and I've read three of his books from Pyr. They were amazing.

Smiles. Ah...dreams publishers. Close my eyes and...

I think I'll check out Abercrombie's writing. He's one I've never read yet.

Technically, no - they're a US house and I only buy imports if I can't get a title locally. But I've read "The Sword of Albion" by Mark Chadbourn, published by Pyr as "The Silver Skull". I thought it was pretty damned good, but then a) I'm a sucker for anything Elizabethan and b) Mark is an experienced novelist and scriptwriter (and an all-round cool bloke as well!).

I've heard a lot of good things about Pyr's head honcho, Lou Anders, as well. I think mid-sized houses are well placed to take publishing forward into the 21st century, having more clout than the small presses and more flexibility to react to changing technology than the megacorp behemoths.

Abercrombie is excellent if you like dark, cynical and gritty

Some of them (Abercrombie included) came out in the UK first (Gollancz picked up Abercrombie for ex.), but were printed/distributed by Pyr in the US.

I think it's pretty smart for a young house to look for established foriegn authors. It's someone unsigned in the U.S with a track record.
