Any specific sub-genre of romance, like contemporary vs historical vs paranormal?

Ones that come immediately come to mind:

Well known long term authors: Nora Roberts, Kathleen Woodiwiss, Jo Beverly
Newer well known authors: Eloisa James, Loretta Chase, Joanna Bourne, Kresley Cole, Sherrilyn Kenyon

job

In the end, it's just you and the manuscript

If you want three recognizable, firmly in the mainstream names:

Nora Roberts
Georgette Heyer
Loretta Chase

Nora Roberts for selling more books than anyone else.

Georgette Heyer for being arguable the founder of genre Romance, respected, and still widely read

Loretta Chase for coming in first in the AAR Readers poll of best 100 books
