Okay, the end to the gun saga. Or at least, an intermediate stopping place (there's still the ten-day wait).

Hey, I own a gun. I just bought a Remington 572 22LR. The LR ammunition is supposed to be the cheapest of the .22s (it's running about a dime a round, which is fine). It was used, but I liked the pump action better than the lever action of the new Ruger 22 they had. (You don't have to drop the gun to pump the next round into the chamber.) The sight lines up well for me, and it fits nicely into my shoulder. It's light enough that I can hold it out and take my time aiming. I also bought a used suede/sheepskin case, which the guy said was a good choice because it's breathable. Anyway, by the time I was done--LR 22 ammo, 22 stinger ammo, background check, safety test/certification, case, cable lock for the case, and gun--I ended up at 474 bucks, so it even came in (barely) under budget.

So, thanks everyone for the help. :)

Decent gun, but unlikely to reliably stop a coyote. I would have said a lever action .357/.38. Light recoil, easy to use.

In CA legal guns, I believe you can get some KelTecs in 5.56mm.

You can also go with a 20 gauge shotgun--easy and cheap to get ammo for, plenty of power for your needs, and won't have extreme range, because you need to be aware where any missed rounds are impacting with a rifle.

Do please check that it is legal to shoot pests where you are, and if there are any state/county restrictions.

As far as finding ammo, there are other sites like this that will help compare cost and availability. www.AmmoSeek.com

This is a drilling, from the German "Drei" meaning "three." Three barrels. This is the standard arrangement of a double shotgun over a single rifle, but any combination is possible. Double rifle with shotgun, large and small rifle with shotgun, or otherwise.

Made about 1920 in Freiburg, Germany by Robert Faller. The Zeiss scope with claw mount is original to the weapon.

This is a 16 gauge double shotgun over a rifle in 8X58R Sauer, which is only produced to custom order anymore. $4/round.

That is reminiscent of the old British double rifles, intended for big game hunting in Africa. They were made in huge calibers, e.g. .400 Nitro Express and larger, and were heavy, upwards of 20 lbs. Beautiful works though.

A good double weights 8-10 lbs. The older ones weren't much heavier because black powder loads have less recoil. I'll get pics of one sometime. I'm reluctant to take long trips with stuff that costs 4-5 figures.

They still make double rifles. You can get base models around $5000. Good ones start around $10K. A modern drilling starts around $16K. Some day I'd love a vierling--four barrels. Beyond that gets silly.

The Germans were, and IIRC still are, taxed on every gun, so they go for combination guns to save license and tax fees.

My wife got me an early anniversary present.

This is a Canadian Inglis contract Browning (Belgium) Hi Power 9mm designed by (American) John Browning made for Nationalist China. When the Communists took over, the contract was cancelled and they were used in Canada briefly, before being surplused. The holster/stock combination is intended to turn an officer's sidearm into a longer ranged weapon, though my experience tells me 500 meter sights are irrelevant on a 12 cm barrel. It is fun to handle, though.

Ordinarily under US law, attaching a stock to a pistol requires paperwork and a $200 tax stamp from BATFE. These and similar Mausers are exempt due to being rare collectibles and out of production. This was made in August 1945.
