Usually, I think it’s lazy to just follow a post with another song by the same singer, but in this case I’ll break my rule. This song was originally a big hit in Japan for the Southern All-Stars a very popular band since the 1980s. It was written by Keisuke Kuwata, the lead singer, and Yuko Hara, his wife and keyboardist for the band. Apparently Ray Charles heard the song while on a concert tour in Japan, liked it, and recorded an English version. Having Ray Charles cover the song elevated Kuwata to "god like" status in Japanese music circles. The original version is called いとしのエリー (Itoshi no Ellie)
Oh, the nostalgia of the K-Tel "Loonie Toons," "Groovy Greats," and other novelty collections of my childhood! Many, many wasted hours I wouldn't want back even if I could.
