A few months ago I started a thread in the Office Party section on picking a name for our daughter, who is due in a few months. The whole thing inspired me to write a short (550-word) essay on the process of picking a name--I entitled it "Name Calling." I submitted it to a paper in Charleston, WV; didn't hear anything for a month, so I emailed them requesting an update. She emailed me back, saying she hadn't gotten it. Would I resubmit? So I did!
About fifteen minutes after sending it to her, I got a response: "I absolutely love this one! What a wonderful column. My editor does have the final say on it, but I'm sure it's in."
Not much money, but it is gratifying, just the same!
