There are so many formats available: epub, LIT, PDF, PRC, and the list goes on.

I have a program to make PDFs from a word document, but what about the others?

Is there software out there that can convert a word document into all the formats, or do you have to get each converter individually? If so, where?

Take a look at Calibre and Stanza. Be prepared to do some testing and experimentation.

You might find Stanza easier to use even though you have fewer options and less control.

I would suggest Kindle (use Amazon's own Word to Kindle tool, via the Website), epub (via Stanza, or possibly Calibre if you're geeky), .pdf and .prc.

Think about Mobi.

I'd skip the others.

You know if I should strip all formatting before? Are there standard margins for converting?

I've found Sigil works better for EPUB than Calibre. I use Mobi Pocket Creator to create the files for Kindle. If you have PDF covered, I'm not sure you'd even need to mess with anything else.

If you are creating a PDF from a word processor, OpenOffice is best. You can export the document with embedded fonts by using "export as PDF/A-1a.
