I remember when I first started learning German that I enjoyed the poetry far more than I do in English. Perhaps by the virtue of the words being new to me, and not ladened with all the tired old connotations, I could read into them a sort of fantasy and wonder not possible with my own mother tongue. Or maybe I just like German poetry. Dunno really.
This classic by Goethe was an early favorite of mine.
Was hat man dir, du armes Kind, getan?-
Kennst du es wohl?
Dahin, dahin
Dahin, dahin
Geht unser Weg.
O Vater, lass uns ziehn!
