Update 8/8/11: Oh, my friends, it appears that my days of obsessive blog reading are about over. I just don't have time to keep up any more. I'm paring back to just a few, and I won't be updating this list any more. I'll take it off sticky when it gets dated. In the meantime, Guide to Literary Agents did their Best Blogs of 2011 a while ago. Check that out. :) /update

Often when someone posts something I think "Hey, I just read a blog post about that!" And several times people have asked me for a list of blogs I read, so I thought I'd write them all out for you. Some of these links are straight to the blog, some are to their RSS feed. (You know about Google Reader, right?)

This is a super-handy way to keep up with agents, genre news, get advice from superstar agents, editors, and other industry insiders. MTS as a genre is tougher than ever to break into. We need to keep ourselves informed, and this is one easy way to do it.

Now I know I'm leaving some blogs out. There are a few that are too stridently political for my taste. I like my industry news straight, not flavored by any politics. That being said, if I'm missing a great blog (including yours), PM me, rep me, or leave a comment. It's possible I haven't seen it yet. I'll update from time to time.

That's a lot of reading...

When do you get time to write? :tongue

I post a few times a week to Phoenix Suns sports blog, but that probably doesn't apply here. ;)

I'll keep that to myself. :D

Thanks all. I hope it's helpful.

Doc, I am a very fast reader. Also, I skim that which isn't applicable and/or interesting.

SJ Gordon, you're dead on. Knowledge is power! :Sun:

And your wish is my command. I'll sticky this. Now please wish me five pounds lighter and with a book deal Thanks!

ETA: If you don't know about Google Reader or other RSS feeds, don't be shy about asking. I'm here to help!

Wonderful idea! Except that now I have a whole lot of blogs and posts I need to catch up on which is going to take away from my writing time.

Thanks, heyjude. Thanks a whole lot. Like I didn't have enough ways to fritter away my valuable writing time already.

:(

Drat! Do I have to pull the plug on my web connection just to get some writing done?

(Yeah, I have no willpower and a multitude of ways to avoid writing while sitting at the 'puter).

:)

Oh boy. And I haven't even told you about the entertainment blogs, etc, I subscribe to. :D

I'm going to mark the Writer's Digest top 5 in red. If you're short on time, these are very helpful on a wide range of topics.

Theakston's Old Peculiar, a British brewery that sponsors the Crime Writer's Festival in Harrogate each year (home of the Debut and other Dagger Awards) is creating a new website -- the Write Crime -- that will have blogs linked to it. Happy to say mine (on how an aspiring mystery writer sees the publishing business) will be one of them. Not sure yet what the URL will be but launch is October 1.

New Blog

Just started a new blog today, Musings, Rantings and Other Nonsense (A look into the recesses of a writers psyche)

Opinions/rants, rambling thoughts and whatever else amuses me on a given day.

I have some new features on my blog now. The first is the "Indie Author in the Spotlight" page which I have been doing for a couple of months now. I am also starting a Guest Author Interview page which will be updated this coming Saturday. My first guest will be Nicholas A Rose from Flintshire, North Wales.

I will also be starting up a page featuring authors and books from the Military Writers Society of America. (Note: These are not all "Military" books. There is a wide variety of genres, including Mystery and Thriller.)

Be sure to stop by and check it out!

I'm a notoriously inconsistent blogger, but I want to start building more of a regular posting pattern and a bigger reader base with my wordpress blog (listed in my sig). I was thinking that I would like to have a few guest blogs on my site over the next few months, so if anyone is interested, just get in touch with me via PM.

Not sure whether this thread is still active, but here goes . . .

My new weekly blog (A short walk down a dark street) provides links to what's fresh, what's famous, and what's fiendish in short mystery and crime fiction.

This week’s links include two reviews of the sharpest issue yet of cutting-edge crime quarterly Switchblade, a pack of nefarious TBR picks, and a free four-part serialized Strand Magazine story by Richard Brewer and Gary Phillips. Plus, a real-life private eye reveals the down-and-dirty about how to snoop through someone’s trashcans (for the Research Folder).

This week’s blog update provides links to Hank Phillippi Ryan sharing a few words about what to say at your next book event; another pack of short, sinister picks for TBR piles; and links to free stories by top-notch authors Danny Gardner and Paul D. Marks (at Beat to a Pulp, 2015-2016).

So c’mon, let's take a walk. A short walk down a dark street.

My blog this week includes a link to a 40-minute video of Lee Child discussing why to break the rules when writing crime fiction. Child covers unlikable characters, “show don’t tell,” and reveals what Elmore Leonard really meant by “never open with the weather.” And he tells a pickle slicer joke and riffs about building suspense and baking a cake.

Past weeks’ posts deliver links to hard-boiled hilarity from Bill Pronzini, lessons on success for authors from Brendan Dubois, a bunch of free stories, and a medley of short & deadly choices for your TBR pile.

So, are you lookin’ for a good time? Try lookin' here:

Interviews with top mystery magazine editors;

The publication of a previously unpublished Ernest Hemingway story;

Writing tips (about unreliable narrators, uncovering errors in your manuscript, and ways to sculpt a story’s sagging middle);

Reviews, releases, and free stories.
