just listening to some sean-nos singing - traditional unaccompanied irish singing - fab stuff!
www.rte.ie/radio (the 'radio na gaeltachta' option then mess around til you get it.

And we know for a fact that it dates back to at least the tenth century--because of the language in some of the songs.

I'm always amazed at how similar sean-nos sounds like Arabic singing. Do you konw if there's a connection?

There's no direct connection--but there are a number of cultures that have something very very similar.
