Have any of you heard of a career called historical journalist? It would be someone who writes about historical events? My daughter wants a career dealing with history but does not want to teach. She would have to relocate out east as our area doesn't have anything to offer.

Does she want to be a writer? If that's not a big goal for her but history is, she should also look into museum-related careers and also the possibility of becoming an academic librarian specializing in history. Academic librarians do a lot of research (most for other people, some for themselves), and write scholarly articles, and choose which books to buy, and go to conferences to present their research--it's not just about checking books out, not at all.

What area (geographical) and period of history is she interested in?

Colonial American History.

Yep, you're right, she needs to be in the Northeast. Possible ways to make her career focus on that historical period: work in a museum, library, university history department, or in tourism (historical sites/reenactment), or be a writer--but it's not journalism she's after (journalism means news), it's just nonfiction.

Has she finished college already? What major?

By the way, you would probably get more answers if you renamed this thread (or posted a new one) with a more interesting name than "question." Make it "question about Colonial American History" or something like that.

She is still in her first year of college. She hasn't decided on her major. She had began in nursing thinking she could at least go to work right away with that. But her passion is history. And unlike most parents, we encourage her to go after what her passion is instead of just getting a career to have money. Because we know, from experience, that if you can love what you are doing you will do much better in it.

I think being a "historical journalist" is simply being a historian. Unless she means she wants to writer articles as opposed to books?
