11. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Ah, one of my favourites! You can never have too much Frances Hodgson Burnett, can you?

Now for my updated list -

31. Hannibal Rising - Thomas Harris
32. The Moonstone - Wilkie Collins
33. Mary, and The Wrongs of Woman - Mary Wollstonecraft
34. The Gun Seller - Hugh Laurie
35. The Great Railway Bazaar - Paul Theroux

And I just want to say, to those of you who haven't read it, Hugh Laurie's novel is FANTASTIC! What a writer!! It's a sort of P.G.-Wodehouse-meets-James-Bond, and if Wodehouse and Fleming met at the height of their powers, I doubt if they could come up with anything much better than the good Mr Laurie. :)

Some of you might remember me saying a few months ago that my reading task for the year was to read every Anthony Burgess and Iris Murdoch novel that I haven't already read. I've left it a bit late to start (we're almost a third of the way through the year already - can you believe it?), but there are only about a dozen or so of each, so I should be able to get through them by the end of the year. I began Tremor of Intent by Burgess this morning, and I'll be sticking largely to Burgess and Murdoch from now until I've finished.

37. The Devil's Mode - "
38. The Pianoplayers - "
39. The Doctor is Sick - "
40. The End of the World News - "

As you can see, my task of reading every Anthony Burgess novel I haven't already read is now underway! I enjoyed all of the above, but The End of the World News (probably my favourite of the bunch) is one that you really have to read twice in order to understand what's happening. But it's good enough to warrant rereading anyway. :)

46. A Vision of Battlements - Anthony Burgess
47. One Hand Clapping - "
48. Napoleon Symphony - "
49. Beard's Roman Women - "
50. The Right to an Answer - "
51. Man of Nazareth - "

Six titles to report this time instead of my usual five, because Man of Nazareth was the last of Burgess' novels that I hadn't already read, and I just thought it would look a bit neater to keep them all together, instead of having a solitary title spilling over into the next post. And with that, ladies and gentlemen, my task of reading every single Anthony Burgess novel comes to an end! HURRAH! Join me in a moment of celebration, dear fellow One Hundred Bookers (and One Hundred Book thread followers)!

:e2drunk::e2dance::hooray::hooray::hooray::hooray::hooray:

Alright - now that our Bacchic frenzy is over, it's on to reading every Iris Murdoch novel I haven't already read! Keep up the good work, everyone. :)

Welcome, Pingle! This thread is certainly a good way of prompting yourself to read more. :) Don't worry about trying to reach 100; it's a tougher task than it sounds, as I discovered last year! You might get there, you might not, but the important thing is to do a lot of good reading and to enjoy yourself. Good luck!

And so Project Iris Murdoch begins! My latest update -

52. The Italian Girl - Iris Murdoch
53. Something Special - "
54. The Red and the Green - "
55. Bruno's Dream - "

61. The Message to the Planet - Iris Murdoch
62. Jackson's Dilemma - "
63. The Time of the Angels - "
64. The Sacred and Profane Love Machine - "

And with that, I have finally read every novel that Iris Murdoch ever wrote! :snoopy::snoopy::snoopy: I invite you all to join me in celebration, dear fellow 100 Bookers! There is homemade fig wine over there and sticky toffee pudding over there. Eat it all or it'll just go to waste. :)

And for number 65, Stephen Fry's excellent book on how to write poetry, which I can wholeheartedly recommend, not just to poets but to aspiring writers of any kind. Your writing will be better after you have read this book! (One online review said, "I learnt more from reading this book than from three years of taking writing classes at university." I can believe it!)

65. The Ode Less Travelled - Stephen Fry

See you again soon, and happy reading!

I only managed 9 in June (mainly because one of the books I read came in at a whopping 700 pages so it took a while to read) and to my shame I didn't manage any YA (although I did get through a couple of MG books so I haven't betrayed the tribe completely). I am also even more horrifically behind on my reviews, which I don't really have a good excuse for.

  1. Star Of The North by D. B. John.
  2. To The Edge Of The World by Julia Green.
  3. The List by Mick Herron.
  4. One Clear Ice-Cold January Morning At The Beginning Of The Twenty-First Century by Roland Schimmerlpfennig.
  5. A New Politics From The Left by Hilary Wainwright.
  6. The Golden Child by Wendy James.
  7. Natboff! One Million Years Of Stupidity by Andy Stanton.
  8. Come And Find Me by Sarah Hilary.
  9. Directorate S: The CIA And America’s Secret Wars In Afghanistan And Pakistan, 2001 – 2016 by Steve Coll.
As ever, reviews are up on my blog https://ireadthereforeiblog.wordpress.com if you're interested in checking them out.

I've just realised that in six months' time, this thread will be ten years old! I think it would be nice to do something to mark the occasion; nothing big, but perhaps someone should contact Wandergirl (the original poster) and let her know that her thread is still going strong! I believe she's a professional author now, and I'm sure she'd be delighted to know that her wonderful idea was responsible for a decade of reading and was still inspiring people to read more today!

I'm hopelessly behind on my reviews at the moment and I'm involved in a judging project at the moment, which involves reading books but not being able to post the reviews until after the winners are announced later this year. So although I managed to read 9 books in July, I've actually only reviewed 7 of them and so can only really count 7 for the purposes of this thread and worse, only 1 of the books I read was for children. So basically July was a giant failure.

  1. Night Of The Party by Tracey Mathias.
  2. The Woman In The Mirror by Rebecca James.
  3. The Power Of Yes by Abbie Headon.
  4. The Case For A Maximum Wage by Sam Pizzigati.
  5. This Is What Happened by Mick Herron.
  6. Will Big Business Destroy Our Planet? by Peter Dauvergne.
  7. The Joneses & The Pirateers: Search For The Phantom Lady by S. L. Westgate.
As ever, reviews are up on my blog https://ireadthereforeiblog.wordpress.com if you're interested in checking them out.

I'm still hopelessly behind on my reviews and the judging project I was involved in took up most of my reading time so I only managed 5 in August but one of them was YA. So. There's that:

  1. Lean Six Sigma For Leaders by Martin Brenig-Jones and Jo Dowdall.
  2. Run, Riot by Nikesh Shukla.
  3. The Real Politics Of The Horn Of Africa by Alex de Waal.
  4. One Way by S. J. Morden.
  5. All Systems Red by Martha Wells.
