I can't believe how much reading you get through, Momento Mori (you are the unofficial reading champion of Absolute Write)! What is your total for the year so far, if you don't mind my asking? Surely you must be over 100 by now!
Keep up the good work.

96. The Philosopher's Pupil - Iris Murdoch
97. The Penguin Dorothy Parker (sadly this was not a novel about a chain-smoking literary penguin known for its crushing bon mots and acid wit. It was, however, a collection of the short stories, poems and reviews of the much-imitated but never bettered Ms Parker, and was almost as much fun as the novel would have been)
98. Surprised by Joy - C.S. Lewis
99. Paperweight - Stephen Fry

And, just to finish on a nice, nostalgic note -

100. The Wind in the Willows - Kenneth Grahame

- because why not? :)

HURRAH! Made it to one hundred, with a few weeks to spare! I've been itching to read Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace over the last few weeks and have held off, because I knew how much it would slow me down and I really wanted to reach the one hundred mark by the end of the year. Now that we're safely over the finishing line I can make a start on it, as well as one or two other long books that have been calling my name in recent months. If I have any more to add for the rest of the year I'll come back and update the list, but Infinite Jest could easily take me through into the new year!

Happy reading, Memento Mori and Sage (and anyone else silently taking part, or just following the thread out of interest)!

50. Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders (audiobook)

50 was my goal for this year, so I have made it. Anything else is bonus.

I am horribly behind on my reviews and still trying to catch up due to RL issues but I managed 10 books in October (although this included a couple of reviews that had been embargoed) and it was a good mix of YA, fantasy, SF and thrillers so it all balances out.

  1. Phantom by Leo Hunt.
  2. A Double Life by Flynn Berry.
  3. The Court Of Broken Knives by Anna Smith Spark.
  4. Under The Pendulum Sun by Jeanette Ng.
  5. The Hunger by Alma Katsu.
  6. The Goose Road by Rowena House.
  7. The Grey Bastards by Jonathan French.
  8. The Seven Deaths Of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton.
  9. Solomon Creed by Simon Toyne.
  10. Lethal White by Robert Galbraith.
As ever, reviews are up on my blog https://ireadthereforeiblog.wordpress.com if you're interested in checking them out.

Ha! Thanks,
GooseAmbassador. The October tally took me up to 103 so I hit my hundred. As at today's date I'm on 122 for the year and I'd set myself a target of 125 so I'll reach it and I'm pretty happy with that. Maximum I've hit is 152. My commute will be changing again in 2019 so I'm going to look at about 130 as something that should be doable. I think there are others here who read more than that - especially those who do the reading and critique manuscripts.

I have been using the Christmas break to catch up on my horrific backlog of reviews and have now updated to the end of November. I was on holiday over the beginning of November, which is why I managed to hit a very respectable 16. The vast majority of them were crime fiction and thrillers, but I did manage 2 YA novels so I can hold my head up in this Forum:

  1. The Quaker by Liam McIlvanney.
  2. All The Hidden Truths by Claire Askew.
  3. The Traitors: A True Story Of Blood, Betrayal And Deceit by Josh Ireland.
  4. The Boy Who Saw by Simon Toyne.
  5. Firefly by Henry Porter.
  6. Cross Her Heart by Sarah Pinborough.
  7. Blood Cruise by Mats Strandberg.
  8. The Chaos Of Now by Erin Lange.
  9. The Anomaly by Michael Rutger.
  10. Dry by Neal Shusterman and Jarrod Shusterman.
  11. Her Every Fear by Peter Swanson.
  12. The Drop by Mick Herron.
  13. The Hope That Kills by Ed James.
  14. Blackwater by James Henry.
  15. The Last Place You Look by Kristen Lepionka.
  16. She’s Not There by Tamsin Grey.
I am going to end the year on 127 (so that's 2 more than the 125 target I set at the beginning of the year). I have settled on 130 as my target for next year so will seehow I get on.

As ever, reviews are up on my blog https://ireadthereforeiblog.wordpress.com if you're interested in checking them out.

I'm psyched to join in for 2019. My goal for this year was 40 books and I only made it to 30, so I had set my official personal goal as 35. But I think I could (and should) definitely do the half marathon of 50.

Do most of you folks leave reviews for each book you read, or is that just extra credit? :p

My name is Kris, btw.

Hey, Kris! I review books I feel like reviewing, but I do it on Goodreads, not here. Sometimes in What YA Book Are You Reading RIGHT NOW? people will put their thoughts on books they're reading or just finished, but not usually in this thread, beyond maybe a sentence here or there.

Good to know. I set up a goodreads account and I'd like to get reviewing some more, but I always forget. I'll look forward to posting my first five books next year, then!

My end-of-year round up -

101. Infinite Jest - David Foster Wallace
102. A Grief Observed - C.S. Lewis
103. Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro
104. Earthly Powers - Anthony Burgess

I think my reading task for next year will be to read every Jeeves and Wooster novel in chronological order, which should be fantastic fun, don't you think? :)

Congratulations, Sage, on reaching your target of 50, and Momento Mori for reaching an incredible 127! But there's no rest for the wicked - see you again next year!

And welcome to the party, Krimigen - I look forward to seeing what you're reading :)

Goal is 100 books this year. Unlike last year (when I didn't finish a single book until February), I've gotten off to a good start. It helps to be in the process of reading 5-6 books when you start the year off and in a reading mood.

1. Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie
2. Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maass
3. The Odyssey by Homer (audiobook)
4. Three-Act Tragedy by Agatha Christie
5. Hidden Huntress by Danielle L. Jensen

A very happy new year to you, Sage, Memento Mori, and anyone else who is following this thread silently.

I just wanted to mention that this thread is now exactly ten years old, having been started in January 2009 by Wandergirl. A quick glance at her profile suggests that she doesn't visit the site any more, but I think we should all raise a glass nevertheless (or a cup, or an eyebrow, or whatever takes your fancy) to Wandergirl for starting a thread that is still alive and kicking a decade later! There is no way that I would have read 200+ books over the last couple of years without the inspiration of this thread, and I have enjoyed every minute of it, so - thank you, Wandergirl!

:e2cheer::e2cheer::e2cheer::e2cheer::e2cheer:

Even more impressively, I note that our own Momento Mori has been contributing to this thread since the very beginning. A decade of reading 100 books per year - extremely impressive indeed! Sincere congratulations to you - you definitely deserve a throne and perhaps a sceptre and robe of office, or something along those lines!
Alas, I have no spare thrones or sceptres lying around at the moment, but please accept this trophy for the time being - :Trophy:

Happy New Year, Y'all (or happy February, as it may be)! I'm excited to make my first real challenge update in here. I think this is the most books I've read in any January since high school.

2. Flamecaster by Cinda Williams Chima
3. The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists by Gideon Defoe
4. Erased 1 by Kei Sanbe
5. A Maiden's Grave by Jeffery Deaver

Well, all I can say is thank you very much for your warm words and the lovely trophy. It's probably a good thing that I don't have a throne as I would only use my power for evil ...

Ah well. Maybe in another 10 years I'll finally make progress on the journey that Wandergirl's done so well on.

In the meantime, I've made a good start on my 130 book target for the year, with 10 books read in January (4 of which are YA/children's fiction):

  1. White Girls by Hilton Als.
  2. Still Lives by Maria Hummel.
  3. The Dark Days Deceit by Alison Goodman.
  4. Mass Starvation: The History And Future Of Famine by Alex de Waal.
  5. Girl In The Window by Penny Joelson.
  6. War Is Over by David Almond and David Litchfield.
  7. The Magic Misfits 2: The Second Story by Neil Patrick Harris.
  8. The Empowered Manager by Peter Block.
  9. Grist Mill Road by Christopher J Yates.
  10. The Free-Time Formula by Jeff Sanders.
As ever, reviews are up on my blog https://ireadthereforeiblog.wordpress.com if you're interested in checking them out.
