Can someone give me some tips on what to write in the oh-so-important letter that you would include with your prospective novel.

And perhaps let me know how many pages, words of my novel I should include with that letter.

I only send the query letter and synopsis first. If they like that, they will ask for more. Its worked on all my stories that were accepted. No since cutting down more trees when the likelihood is very high most will be rejected (over 99%).

In the UK, the general practice is to send the first three chapters of a manuscript with a covering letter that's structured similarly to the US query letter (about which you'll find oodles of good advice here).
