There are moments, above all on June evenings,
when the lakes that hold our moons are sucked into the earth,
and nothing is left but wine and the touch of a hand.

- Charles Morgan

Welcome to the June goals thread! This is the place to state your goals for the coming thirty days. They can be goals for writing, editing, reading - you name it. Put 'em down here and get ready to be cheered on - and do some cheering yourself! And don't forget that the second NaNoWriMo Camp begins July 1st - so be thinking about your participation in that event. Usually someone will start an AW Cabin, so when the signup thread is started, I'll be sure to link to it here.

As usual, I'll start us off. I've been doing pretty well with my monthly 2019 writing goals for Book 5 in my fantasy series, so I'm aiming to keep that good record going with another 8k words for June. I'm also hoping to re-release Book 2 in the series by mid-month, so I've got goals to set for that, as well as my usual reading and exercise goals, although I'm not doing very well at the latter. I've set myself a pitifully small goal so I have a better chance of reaching it.

[ ] Write 8k words on Book 5 of my series - 0 out of 8,000
[ ] Read 3 books - 0 out of 3
[ ] Exercise 30 minutes a week - 0 out of 4

[ ] Republish Book 2 of my series on Amazon
[ ] Do promo for Book 2, including sale pricing on Book 1

[ ] Review Book 3 of series
[ ] Rewrite Book 3 front matter and acknowledgements section
[ ] Forward everything to designer/formatter for new cover and interior layout
[ ] Determine publishing/promo schedule for Book 3

[ ] Decide if I'm going to participate in the July Camp

Hiya! Haven't been here in a minute.

Congrats on the (upcoming) rerelease, Mrs! I know getting the rights back has been a process.

Can't believe it's already June, not sure if this year's been flying by or crawling slowly on it's belly, in any case I feel like I accomplished nothing this year. Oh well, it's summer and the dog is blowing his coat, so everything is covered in a layer of downy blue-black fur. It's kind of gross, but a sign to us all that a new start is possible. Or maybe I'm just torturing metaphors to talk about my dog. :D

One goal, because I've been struggling so much lately:

[ ] 10k by the end of the month on draft two of SUMMERLAnD. Will not get distracted!

*Immediately gets distrac-*

ADDED:

[ ] CodeCombat Javascript tutorial, at least one lesson per day.

[ ] Exercise three times a week
[ ] Clean my office
[ ] Lose some weight. Get back down to ~200 pounds.
[ ] Look into filing for Social Security (I'll be 62 in November)

Writing break (ish) this month. Hope to read at least a little bit each day (excepting the 1st - I had a very busy (but lovely!) long weekend). Would like to read some shorts as well as novels, even if it's just the Hugo nommed ones. I've fallen out of the habit. I've been reading the flash pieces for the Podcastle contest (except the most recently closed group - thought I'd have time to do it after my weekend, but misread that end time, oops) and it's been nice.

That said, I still hope to get a short story written (an anthology theme caught my eye), maybe a bit of game stuff, maybe figure out a map/occupant list for Haven (which I need so I stop confusing myself about who is who and lives where). Just in a very taking it easy, not worrying kind of way.

1. Reach each day left in the month!
2. Read five books.
3. Read a number of shorts.
4. Do some game planning.
5. Write a short story.
6. Start Haven map/occupant list.
7. Bake something.

Good grief, eternalised, that's really impressive. And Tamlyn, there's nothing wrong with a small break.

I'm putting this progress down now, because I can feel a bad cold coming on and I want to remind myself that I've done something:

[ ] finish a draft of the Hill Rain story
[ ] finish at least one more piece of my sweater
[ ] mail out some cards
[ ] finish a novel for the Hugos
[ ] finish a second novel for the Hugos
[ ] revise one of my existing stories and get it out
[ ] four more submissions (not counting the above) - progress, 2/4 - one of them already came back with a rejection, but hey

Best luck, everyone: it's nearly hump day.

You inspire me! I stand in awe of your goals. :) Good luck! And congrats on any progress thus far--how are we already a week into June! I'm still catching my breath from Mayno!

My only goal for June is to... come up with a set of goals for July, LOL. See y'all in a few weeks.

(I mean, there will be stuff progressing, but nothing formal... but July-- watch out! Big list coming!)

Week one update, and I am succeeding MAGNIFICENTLY at having a break.

I mean, this one would have been hard for me to fail, honestly, but still :p

I have done no writing at all. I have played much game and read much book. I finished Blackout by Connie Willis and have moved straight onto All Clear. I missed another Podcastle group of shorts, but hopefully can read some more stuff tomorrow.

Since I've not actually done any writing, a very short update from me this time :)

1. Reach each day left in the month! So far :)
2. Read five books. 1/5
3. Read a number of shorts. Flash?
4. Do some game planning. Nup!
5. Write a short story. Nup!
6. Start Haven map/occupant list. Nup!
7. Bake something. Not yet.

Not a bad start to the month. I'd hoped to get few more words written, but the latter part of the week was eaten up with travel and high school graduation festivities for a niece in North Carolina. I finished a book (Voices from Chernobyl by Svetlana Alexievich), started another and am on track with my short story reading as well. I got in about three hours of exercise (the bulk of it spent weeding, digging and mulching), and finished the final review of the galleys for Book 2 of my series. Barring any glitches, I'm hoping to get everything uploaded to Amazon by the end of the week and solidify my modest promo plans, too. Then I can move ahead on Book 3's re-release.

[ ] Write 8k words on Book 5 of my series - 1244 out of 8,000
[ ] Read 3 books - 1 out of 3
[ ] Exercise 30 minutes a week - 1 out of 4

[ ] Republish Book 2 of my series on Amazon
[ ] Do promo for Book 2, including sale pricing on Book 1

[ ] Review Book 3 of series
[ ] Rewrite Book 3 front matter and acknowledgements section
[ ] Forward everything to designer/formatter for new cover and interior layout
[ ] Determine publishing/promo schedule for Book 3

[ ] Decide if I'm going to participate in the July Camp

Just wanted to make the group aware that the AW spring fundraising drive fell a little short of its goal. If you use and enjoy AW, consider making a donation. There's subscription and donation info at the top of every forum page, and you can either donate via PayPal or send a check via snail mail.

It costs about $12 a day to run the site. Even a small donation can help.

Slightly belated week two. I just forgot.

I realised I was almost halfway through the month and hadn't done any of my writing stuff. So I figured I should start the short. Only done 500 words so far, but I've figured out in those 500 words where I want the story to go and how, so I'm happy with that. Otherwise I've had a cold so very glad I've not had to force writing through the fuzziness.

I finished All Clear by Connie Willis and moved straight onto the next Famous Five by Enid Blyton and that was, uh, a very sharp transition. I managed to survive it though ;p Fallen off my Podcastle shorts completely though.

Alas, rejections have not gotten word this is my writing break month and keep coming in to remind me how depressing things are on that front.

1. Reach each day left in the month! So far :)
2. Read five books. 3/5
3. Read a number of shorts. Flash?
4. Do some game planning. Nup!
5. Write a short story. Started!
6. Start Haven map/occupant list. Nup!
7. Bake something. Not yet.

I hit the "publish" button on Amazon this morning for the second book in my fantasy series, FISKUR. Barring any issues, the ebook and paperback formats should go live in the next day or so. I'm going to be playing around with promo pricing for the first book in the series - haven't decided whether to go "free" or just reduce the price during the first few weeks of FISKUR's re-release. But anyway, that's a goal down, and now I can move ahead with the re-release of Book 3.

I got a fair amount of writing accomplished this week, continue on track with my short story reading and finished another book (Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon). Between gardening and walking around the store (when there's no business, I try to get 500 brisk steps in, which is roughly .25 mile), I met my exercise goal this week, too. The 30 minutes a week goal is so low as to be embarrassing, but I find that I'm exceeding it now - sort of like my 100 words a day goal when I'd been semi-blocked for so long.

Still on the fence about the July camp. I picked up a last-minute teaching gig which starts tomorrow and runs through July 22nd, and I'll be gearing up to start rehearsals for my next show while winding down work at the bird store. I think I'll be able to fit it in; I'm just not ready to commit yet.

[ ] Write 8k words on Book 5 of my series - 3,041 out of 8,000
[ ] Read 3 books - 2 out of 3
[ ] Exercise 30 minutes a week - 2 out of 4

[x] Republish Book 2 of my series on Amazon
[ ] Do promo for Book 2, including sale pricing on Book 1

[ ] Review Book 3 of series
[ ] Rewrite Book 3 front matter and acknowledgements section
[ ] Forward everything to designer/formatter for new cover and interior layout
[ ] Determine publishing/promo schedule for Book 3

[ ] Decide if I'm going to participate in the July Camp

Check-in time again!

Still need to make time for the decluttering, but still not doing so. Dang it.

Also still have to figure out what I want to do for Camp. I'm trying to think of something I can work on that will be a challenge, rather than something I'd get done just in the course of my daily routine anyway. I've got a pretty comprehensive routine going, though, filling my available time, so I'm not sure where I can stretch. Hrm. Maybe I can increase my revisions. I might need them if I want to get the third PoV re-written next month, which I do.

Speaking of July Camp, I recently saw a thread somewhere on the forum about an AW Cabin starting up, but I think it must have been on one of the genre-specific subforums. If I locate it I'll post a link here.

I'm not doing that great on my single goal of making a list of goals for July, but I am doing great on not meeting any other goals, you know, the ones I didn't make.

Just popping in to cheer you all on.

Prolly won't do Camp this year--I did it last year (15K words) then continued with that piece in NaNo (another 50K),. Then after NaNo I scrapped the whole thing (65K) and started over, more organically, on the book. I'm certain the 65K words that I won't use informed my new version of my next novel (which is still at 35K since March), and I am glad to have pushed myself to write 4K words per day last November as a sort of sprint training. BUT, my gut says to keep on with the way I'm knocking off other goals, now, and that's less about word count and more about wrangling concepts into shape.

Keep up the good work, everyone!
