Oh! Hello, February, you shortest month of the year! Still, it's plenty of time for us AWers to make some goals and get ready to meet them, and cheer on your fellow writers (NaNo or not) as they close in on their own.

As usual, I'll get us started. I have a tough month ahead - rehearsals continue for my show, and I'll be scrambling to keep up (I'm understudying one of the leads as well as covering three ensemble tracks). I also have two birthdays to deal with: my mom turns 96 on 2/8, and my husband's birthday is 2/14, and we'll be apart, which is just sad. I'm going to see if I can get him to come up for a visit for the President's day weekend, for a belated celebration. Lots of other stuff starting to happen with my upcoming book release in August, so I have to stay abreast of all that, too. Aiiiieeeeeee...

1. Write Sekrit Solstice short story
2. Finish editor's 2nd/final pass on Book #2 in fantasy series
3. Do social media blast for Feb. 22nd cover reveal for Book #1
4. Figure out birthday gift for my mom
5. Figure out birthday gift for my husband
6. Do final draft of Book #3 in series, incorporating beta input
7. Read three books

My February goals are pretty much the same as my January goals. That's okay. It worked in Jan so maybe it'll work in Feb.

Already started one chapter (carrying over from last month) and am reading After Alice by Gregory Maguire. Can't say the style is entirely working for me atm but I like adaptions enough I'm willing to keep going.

1. Complete Solstice Swap story.
2. Continue game creation.
3. Edit five chapters.
4. Read five books.
5. Min 500 words or 2 pages edited per day.

  • Write and edit Snoebels, Cat Detective.
  • Set up a cover reveal, release blitz and blog tour for Snoebels, Cat Detective.
  • Format Snoebels, Cat Detective and the paperback for Sally Sleuth and The Missing Mice.

Right, so. Once again I completely forgot about the goals I set here. I am not good at this accountability thing :tongue Going to try and do better this month, where my goals will look a lot like last month.

February Goals:
  • Finish manual I'm editing
  • Finish short story
  • Work in more reading time

Constant Goals:
  • Changing sleep cycle
  • Write 1K words a day: 4/52 weeks

This first week of February seemed to fly by: rehearsals all day and arriving home with just enough time to eat dinner, talk to my husband and my mom, maybe review some material from the day's work and then crash for the night. Although there was no writing or editing in the picture, I finally got an idea for my Sekrit Solstice story and will be working on that Sunday, along with the edits for Book #2.

Still pegging away at How to Read Water, my current read. I decided to send flowers (potted iris bulbs, actually) to my mother for her 96th birthday, and my husband is coming up for the weekend following his birthday, so I will shower him with love and dinners out while he's here in the Big Apple. That's two goals met, and that's something, at least.

1. Write Sekrit Solstice short story
2. Finish editor's 2nd/final pass on Book #2 in fantasy series
3. Do social media blast for Feb. 22nd cover reveal for Book #1
4. Figure out birthday gift for my mom -
DONE
5. Figure out birthday gift for my husband -
DONE
6. Do final draft of Book #3 in series, incorporating beta input
7. Read three books

Finished one chapter. Began edits on story and think I know what I need to do with it. Have actually not done that much game stuff!

I paused After Alice to read What Katy Did Next (again). I have no idea what I suddenly really wanted to read it, but I did. So I did. Finished Alice afterwards. It was... odd. I wanted to like it, but I don't think it entirely delivered. But I did read it all without delay? (except delaying for a different book :p)

1. Complete Solstice Swap story. Started.
2. Continue game creation. Little bit.
3. Edit five chapters. 1/5
4. Read five books. 2/5
5. Min 500 words or 2 pages edited per day. Yep.

Jealous that you've got a start on your story. I finally have an idea, at least, but my day off yesterday was all about editing.

Update time, though I haven't made much progress.

February Goals:
  • Finish manual I'm editing
    Nope.
  • Finish short story
    Nope.
  • Work in more reading time
Actually managed this! Worked in reading time during the week, though I need to make an effort to add extra on the weekends, when I'm distracted by other things.

Constant Goals:
  • Changing sleep cycle
I've made it worse, but that doesn't really count.
  • Write 1K words a day: 5/52 weeks

Got the 2nd pass on Book #2 finished, and actually wrote a couple of paragraphs on my Sekrit Solstice story. I have to think about where it's headed before I can continue.

Read the graphic novel The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and didn't much care for it. Went back to How to Read Water - less than 100 pages to go. I may have to treat myself to a Discworld book when I'm done.

1. Write Sekrit Solstice short story - started
2. Finish editor's 2nd/final pass on Book #2 in fantasy series -
DONE
3. Do social media blast for Feb. 22nd cover reveal for Book #1
4. Figure out birthday gift for my mom -
DONE
5. Figure out birthday gift for my husband -
DONE
6. Do final draft of Book #3 in series, incorporating beta input
7. Read three books -
1 of 3

Got 1.5 of the synopses done, but been too busy to do writerly stuff lately. And unfortunately I want to revamp the one synopsis I got done, because I'm changing up a chunk of the story. Sigh.

Weekly update.

February Goals:
  • Finish manual I'm editing
    Not finished, but making progress.
  • Finish short story
    Nope.
  • Work in more reading time
Still having trouble with weekends, but I think I've got a good system for during the week.

Constant Goals:
  • Changing sleep cycle
Did better this week. Accepted reality and decided to move my wake up time back progressivly, instead of a big jump.
  • Write 1K words a day: 6/52 weeks

Updating to say I unfortunately don't have much of an update!

I read The Bone Queen by Alison Croggan. I enjoyed it and would like to read the series it's a prequel to, but there was just too much telling and the like in the actual writing for me to go this is a really good book. But I do want to read the others? I don't know. It took me way too long to read it; my reading habits are in such a bad state :(

Otherwise I've made a little bit of progress on another chapter and a tiny bit of game, but I really need to get myself together if I'm going to get anywhere near close to completed goals by the end of the month. I've made progress on the editing of my Solstice Swap story. Because I've only been editing novel chapters, which have already undergone a round of edits, and flash pieces of late, I'd forgotten how much hard work editing can be.

Otherwise I have been playing far too much Stardew Valley *cough*

1. Complete Solstice Swap story. Progress.
2. Continue game creation. Little bit.
3. Edit five chapters. 1/5
4. Read five books. 3/5
5. Min 500 words or 2 pages edited per day. Yep.

Absolutely no stinkin' progress at all this week - and in fact, I have to ADD a goal for the month, since I received the galleys for Book 1 and the publisher would like them back within a month. Feeling a bit overwhelmed as my show moves into its Broadway home starting Tuesday. We'll be in tech (long hours) and then into previews (also long hours) for the next month. I've decided the only way I'm going to get anything on the list accomplished is to take small daily bites. Fortunately, the only task I absolutely, positively MUST finish by the end of the month is my short story - the others can slop over into March.

1. Write Sekrit Solstice short story - started
2. Finish editor's 2nd/final pass on Book #2 in fantasy series -
DONE
3. Do social media blast for Feb. 22nd cover reveal for Book #1
4. Figure out birthday gift for my mom -
DONE
5. Figure out birthday gift for my husband -
DONE
6. Do final draft of Book #3 in series, incorporating beta input
7. Read three books -
2 of 3
8. Review galleys of Book #1

ETA: I take it back about not getting anything accomplished - I forgot I finished Tristan Gooley's How to Read Water. It was pretty good, although I think a fair amount of it went over my head.
;)

    Done! Huzzah!

Got in a bit on the weekend, which as nice, and the weekday plans are still holding strong. If I can keep it up this week, I'll be able to call it done.

Constant Goals:
  • Changing sleep cycle
Weekday plan works, but a malfunctioning alarm and deadline through off my weekend.
  • Write 1K words a day: 7/52 weeks

Not much to report. Tried to finish the synopses, but stuck on them. Realized what the problem was, but I need some time to mull on it. Did a little writing, but was struggling there too, so I read instead.

We're just a few days out from the end of the month! Time to muster our strength for a last push at meeting those February goals (and start thinking about our March objectives, too).

My book cover reveal was Wednesday and I got up early to hit all my social media bases before heading to rehearsal. Got a lot of positive responses on the cover (below), and more importantly, I'm really happy with it - which is a good thing, as it's the first in a series and the subsequent books will have a similar look. I also finished my third book, so that's two goals met for the week. Tomorrow I have a blessed, blessed day off and I MUST finish that short story and tackle the galleys. We are heading into Hell Week of rehearsal (four consecutive 12-hour work days) and whatever doesn't get finished tomorrow is simply not going to get finished this month.

(Goal #6 was a pie-in-the-sky goal. I knew that going in, but still, I'd hoped...)

1. Write Sekrit Solstice short story - started
2. Finish editor's 2nd/final pass on Book #2 in fantasy series -
DONE
3. Do social media blast for Feb. 22nd cover reveal for Book #1
DONE
4. Figure out birthday gift for my mom -
DONE
5. Figure out birthday gift for my husband -
DONE
6. Do final draft of Book #3 in series, incorporating beta input
7. Read three books - 3
of 3 DONE
8. Review galleys of Book #1

1. Write 20,000 words: 5/20K. Keeping at it!
2. Finish a beta read for a friend: DONE YESSSS
3. Read at least two NetGalley review books: EXCEEDED: 3 read, on track for 4 by month end.

Casting an eye across to March and making some hopeful plans...
  • Finish the quick revision of ATBT and get it out to betas.
  • Make some solid progress revising DIVIDE.

I think I'm going to avoid a word count goal next month. It just encourages me to procrastinate with stray plotbunnies instead of focusing on my top priorities.

February Goals:
  • Finish manual I'm editing
    Finish short story

Work schedule is making this one touch and go, but I'm still calling it done since it's more than before.

Constant Goals:
  • Changing sleep cycle
Weekends are still tricky, but seems to be working pretty well.
  • Write 1K words a day: 8/52 weeks
