I have enough research material to fill two books on the same
general topic.

If none of the material overlaps, it is conceivable that I could
sell the books to different publishers?

A writer I know says that once I sell the first book, there's no way any
other publisher would want the second book.

Thank you.

I'm not sure I get it -- none of the material overlaps but it's the same topic?

Having enough research material to fill two books doesn't sound like it wouldn't overlap, if it's research on the same thing....

You'd be better off trying to get a two-book deal with the first publisher. Assuming you can get one. The exception would be if one was an illustrated book and the other was not; then two publishers would probably be more feasible.

I'd only use two different publishers if the first wasn't open to both books.
I appreciate all your responses! Thanks.

I do not know. I am only making a guess here. I'd try to get a 2 book or 3 book deal. If you are an expert in Fly fishing or physics, I do not see why you would not be publishing several books in your area of expertise. Most writers do have areas of expertise or experience, and end up writing many books about the subject (s) within that area. You would expect Neil Degrass Tyson to write about Astronomy, because that is what he does.

I would recommend taking the questions that people want answering first, and turn them answers into a decent book, you can then move onto book two once you build up a following, give me a shout if you need a hand. :)
