Aquiline. As in noses or features. I have never heard anyone in real life describe a nose or feature as "aquiline," but nearly every MC of every book written 20 years either side of 1950 was aquilinity defined.

Sat Nam! (Literally "Truth Name"--a Sikh greeting)

My mother used the word a fair amount. I have that type of nose. Sort of. So does she. It means eagle-like, AKA angled.

Blessings,

Here and now

Yes, aquilin is definitely a description for the nose. Much used in French.

Sounds like a neat book. Title?

The title is: "Lost in Translation" by Ella Frances Sanders. Another word I really like: pisan zapra, from the Malay language. It means "the time needed to eat a banana" Apparently it takes two minutes. :)

This thread is AWESOME! :D

I totally agree. I love it!

I'm reading a fat literary novel and keeping a pen in hand, there are so many words either I've never seen before, or that I only kinda-sorta-maybe know what they mean. For now I just have the list, not the definitions, but look for some literary input from me when (if?) I finish City on Fire.

Maryn, nearly too old to learn but not quite there

Thanks to this thread, I've fallen way behind on my list of words I intend to learn. I paste these in, but not in order.

exorcism: the expulsion or attempted expulsion of an evil spirit from a person or place.

In actual fact, I think it was more an attempt at personal exorcism

FYI - I am also done with GRRM for a while, so likely will not be adding a plethora of new words here unless I get another word addict for an author to read! :)

I often write down words and phrases as I read a book or magazine. As bookmarks, I use small pieces of lined paper and fill them as I go through a novel. It's fun to read through them at the end of the book :)
Some recent phrases I wrote down:
"he laughed an unbelieving laugh"
"he could almost see her poking around in her mind for the words"
"he was a charismatic gale of a man"
