Damn. Along with Michael Crichton, who also died 'young', Clancy's books defined my technothriller reading phase (age 14-16, roughly). I still have a soft spot for The Sum of All Fears, possibly the brickiest brick of a brick-shaped brick ever to be committed to mass-market paperback.

:(

The Hunt for Red October and Red Storm Rising, two of the very first novels I read in English. He's one of the reasons I maintained a functional command of English in my youth. I devoured Ryan's novels whenever I laid my hands on them.

RIP Mr. Clancy. You will be missed.

I remember reading Red Storm Rising back in 1988, when I was still in High School. It was one of the first books to make me fall in love with AU tales.

R.I.P. Tom Clancy.

He'll be missed. Though personally, I lost interest in his later novels. I did like the earlier ones...

RIP

Jeff

For the political/military/espionage thriller, it doesn't get much better than this author. Accurately researched and a blast to read. None of the filmed work based on his titles has ever quite gotten it right.

THE SUM OF ALL FEARS stands out not just for being a 900+ word thriller that reads in a few days, but because Clancy's story seemed eerily ahead of the news at the time, and in the '90s those headlines were already moving pretty damned fast. Excellent storyteller.

R.I.P.

That's a shame. I think The Hunt for Red October is the only book of his I've ever read, but my father has a whole bunch of his books.

RIP.

Just saw this. A real shame. Fine writer, knew how to turn out well-researched thrillers. Loved his novels, sense of pace...everything.

I enjoyed the two Clancys that I've read -- The Cardinal of the Kremlin and Patriot Games -- and am looking forward to reading Without Remorse sometime soon.

RIP, TC.

On a beach, of course.
I still remember when I read The Hunt for Red October for the first time. I was hooked. I devoured his books for quite a while after that.

R.I.P. Mr. Clancy.

My father gave me a box set of his books for Christmas when I was a bit young for them, but I enjoyed them later on.

Damn shame.
