Got a few live one's here....
www.publishamerica.com/cgi-bin/pamessageboard/data/newauthors/2496.htm

Mistakes and all.....
Right, this is off the cuff. My book will not be out till the summer, this idea will take me through till then.

I am thinking of a new book called "200 Authors"

It is about how I got published and met a wonderful group of other authors on this site. Here is the good bit. Then 200 authors from PA contribute one page about themselves and their book and on the opposite page an extract from their book. They will be able to include details of their websites and where to purchase the books etc.

The point is PA authors are special. They are only too pleased to sign copies, add a letter of thanks and sometimes the gift of a bookmark or some such small token for the buyer.

Plese understand this is only at the idea stage so all I am looking for is 200 authors who are interested. I do not need any content at this time.

PA would publish the book because with 200 authors plugging it will sell well enough. As far as any profit from sales are concerned I would like to donate proceeds to two authors on this site that are trying to help us all. One has opened her own bookstore and the other started printing out sheets to hand out.

O.K. ...so,.. this person is going to have a book published by P.A., with a huge list of authors from said company. The idea, I believe, is essentially to have a catalogue of authors so people can order P.A. books. Hmmm! So if the book itself isn't going to be available in stores,..is this not counter productive?

One new P.A. author had to ask the question.......

Message:
"who's hb marcus?"
WHO'S HB MARCUS???
Do you live in a storm cellar? I'll bet you missed that whole Beatles thing too.

I'm Mr.PA! I'm the loaded weapon for PA.(I'm also a constant embarrassment. Heh-heh)
Actually I'm one of the oldest members of the PA family. I have a website for the use of PA authors that can also be pretty entertaining. There is indeed a large celeb list on there with everything from authors to basketball stars. I also include cover-links on my site throughout the entertainment. I'll be doing a lot of updates after the first of the year sometime.

Mr. P.A.? ....that's like admiting you're Pee Wee Herman!

...and back to that poor woman ...Ms. Robins. She actually has a glimpse of faith in response to her fellow P.A. author's posting. Ms. Robins actually asks how long it'll take for all publishers to convert to PoD. I knew it would happen..., a kind word of false expectations and she's back on the bandwagon trying to promoter her P.A. book. C'mon Ms. Robins, forget the soul searching.....do some web searching!!!

What I don't understand...

...is why "Carl" has to be personally insulting to people when publishing business items are being discussed. Either he is stupid, heavily invested in PA, or just closely tied personally to them. Y'all are starting to convince me that he might be someone higher up in the PA hierarchy than our low keyed friend, Mr. Marcus.

Carl's fishing

I think he is trying to get someone to divulge their plans, ie. other media stories that will break, potential lawsuits, basis for a further media push.

There were three statements that Carl said that were very close to emails I've received from PA. He said "Shoddy journalism I'd say." My PA email also called work shoddy.

He also said "Ms. Powers, I am not now nor have I ever been employed in anyway shape or fashion by Publish America. You're going off on one of your ill advised tangents again."

"anyway shape or fashion" is used on their website. "We are not in that league, in any way, shape or fashion." And in an email to me.

The response from PublishAmerica to my Better Business Bureau complaint refers to me as Ms. Powers, the letter that accompanied the contract termination is addressed to Ms. Powers, and the termination agreement itself is Ms. Powers.

It just struck me as odd, I signed my post on PW with Power, and he addresses me as Powers.

Sounds to me like further evidence that "Carl" is closely affiliated with PA. They've been known to use the word "tangent" in e-mails to authors, too. "Carl" probably does have a vested interest in learning as much as he can about what is being said and done about PA.

Re: Names

"It just struck me as odd, I signed my post on PW with Power, and he addresses me as Powers."

Just an observation, Dee, but a lot of folks mistakenly add an 's' to the end of your name...although the other evidence may be useful, I wouldn't put much into this one...

What's Going On Now?

Okay guys...help me out here. Just who is this person, anyway? I copied and pasted this from Publishers Weekly. Didn't know if I should have done that or not, but I really felt that everyone needed to see this just in case no one's visited the PW site in a while.

I want to encourage every author who is currently fighting against the practices of Publish America to cease this conversation with Carl. Believe me, the only people reading this garbage is the Publish America old and new authors. Any one with any sense of credibility will not regard anything Carl says here as fact or for that matter any author who engages in defending their position against his verbal attacks. It's obvious he is from Publish America. We all know that. Heck, we have the emails with the same sentences, name-calling and language he uses. Calling him out or letting him or any other Publish America Executive get you mad enough to divulge intricate details for their benefit is just shooting yourself in the foot. Stop the nonsense, leave it alone and eliminate the possibility that this thread will continue to degrade humans that are on opposing sides. Please, do not give in to the anger, the temptation to provide this heathen with more facts that he can use against you. It's time to drop this web site, time to move on and time to do something about it. Take the letters that you would write here and send them to the proper authorities in Maryland who are investigating author claims. Thank you be to grace, forgiveness, resolution and hope. Have a Happy Holiday Season. Carl, I think we’ve all had enough. I pray your heart softens and you stop condemning these fine people. Winchester Hall 12 E. Is this person for real; or is this just another sly PA tactic?

I have thought this for a while. I don't think anyone at PA would ever say these words. They want to know what's going on so they're prepared. I think this is probably sound advice. We all know this guy Carl is with PA. The same language is in all our emails. It's highly unlikely that he would call us "whiners" and PA uses the same language and not be from PA. I think that this might just be a person who might know a thing or two about the element of surprise? Ya think?

One thing is for sure, this M Smith has visited many boards to get that address or is in the know of someone who does. That's the ONLY office I know of who has not "Passed the Buck" of all the authorities in Maryland. Good job telling everyone about it!

Re: Doubt that it's PA Tim....

I see...

At first, I thought that it might be just another tactic from PA.

I certainly hope Mr. Smith's efforts will turn out to be effective.

This allows PA to see that more, and more attention is being drawn from various credible individuals.

As a matter of fact, legitimate publishers print books like this all the time. They are called "catalogs" and are given out free to every bookstore who might order any of the books. PA should be doing this as a matter of course.

I'm willing to bet that PA would be happy to get behind this scheme, however -- have the authors pay for the catalogs and then have to sell them to the retail buyers. Horribly inefficient, but it will bring PA a lot of money. Heck, it might even make the NY Times ad, if they're still doing that.

---That's what I said..(sort of)...However, the snag P.A. might think of is ...if the catalog is available to the potential book store, then why aren't the authors books?
(...if distributed by P.A. They would probably make enough money off the authors to wave the fee of distribution, but I'm giving benefit of the doubt to P.A. Whew!)
I think it would be safer to say, if this author puts this into vogue and P.A. says 'go for it', it will just be another P.A. book published and unavailable.

Re: Meanwhile, back at P.A. (with appologies to James)

Yes and it would be an opportunity for them to aggravate 200 of their authors in one fell swoop. Imagine that. PA would then have another rare opportunity to get into the world records by banning 200 authors at one time. ;)

Uh, yeah, Dee, I know what you mean. Definitely a strange twist. I'm going out on a limb here, but I think he doesn't like Behler very much.

And Carl keeps going and going and going. . .

Hope you're keeping up with the hourly postings on the PW board. Now Carl and M Smith are engaged in a battle of wits. I used to think Carl was from PA. Now I'm starting to wonder if he's from our planet.

PW thread

I think the worst part is that this discussion will never ever end. It doesn't matter who posts what, Carl will be right back to counter with whatever point it is that he's trying to make, which I have no idea what it might be anymore.

M. Smith was a voice of reason, but he's losing his battle against Carl. Soon M. Smith will disappear and someone else will take his place. Carl will be there, fighting the battle with illogic, unrelated examples, misspellings, name-calling and totally incorrect and undocumented arguments.

It's so sad. Almost as sad as the 200 Authors book. Imagine if this goes through, that leaves out 9,800 other authors who are part of the PA trap unable to get into a catalog. THEN, they're going to expect their friends and relatives to buy this catalog. PA gets richer from selling it. It's unreal.

Now for something different

For those in need of a break from the usual, may I suggest a side excursion to Writers Net at URL www.writers.net/forum/read/4/38093/38093 where there's a topic going on for titles that ordinarily wouldn't be seen on a children's or YA book.

Be aware that some of the titles are ribald.

Never engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed man.

I'm not sure when I've laughed so hard for so long. The titles have that punch-drunk quality to them, like when people have been writing too long under a severe deadline. Thanks for sharing the link. My abs also thank you.

Re: Doubt that it's PA Tim....

Mr. Dave,

I must confess your little link has caused me much embarrassment. Everyone looks at you a little funny when you bust out laughing in the middle of a public campus computer lab. :rollin

Thanks for link. It was great for breaking up the "school coma" I slip into at least once a day Mon. - Fri. :lol

Actually, I think this guy has hit on something. Here's one PA author who will be able to sell at least 200 copies to someone other than himself.
