Is Stackpole Books (http://www.stackpolebooks.com) a division of Barnes & Noble? I can't find anything on their website that indicates they are, but an author I know (whose books are being reissued by Stackpole) says so.

Does Stackpole do promotions for its books? Does Stackpole place books in bookstores, or do the bookstores have to special order? (Stackpole's website states it is for consumer ordering only.) Does Stackpole issue a catalogue?

According to its website, Stackpole distributes for "Quiller Press and Swan Hill Publishing of the United Kingdom; as well as Aerial Perspective Publishing, the Army War College Foundation Press, BMC Publications, the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania, Mazur's Mushrooms and More, the Pennsylvania Capitol Preservation Committee, Pulgas Ridge Press, and RB Books." Does this mean Stackpole books are not distributed by Ingram? Or that Stackpole distributes in addition to Ingram?

B&N acquired Sterling in 2003, but I don't find any connection to Stackpole.

As I understand it, Ingram is a major wholesaler, but only one of many distributors.

Nope, Borders is an entirely separate entity (which owns Waldenbooks, FWIW). Barnes & Noble has B. Dalton, though, maybe that what he's thinking of?

I'd like to pick up this thread if possible. A simple google search isn't offering me author opinions about the publisher.

A friend of mine is writing a fascinating book about the Civil War - she has already contacted Stackpole who wants to publish it, but she is cleaning it up for them, per their request.

I've asked her if she's been here and she has not, so I thought I'd try to get any feedback from you regarding their "deal."

Simple questions: does anybody know how they are with their authors? Fair? Do they assist the author with marketing? Are they reliable? Will she be swindled? etc....

Perfectly respectable small-press non-fiction house. Their books are regularly reviewed by Booklist, Publishers Weekly, NYTBR, and Newsweek.

I expect that they act as a distributor (that is, sales force on the streets) rather than a wholesaler (like Ingram).

Thanks a bunch. So concise! So clean!

By the way, where in the world is your writing forum? I can't find it.

Hi crobinator, do you mean the Share Your Work forum? To find that, go up to the top of this page and click on Conference Room. That will bring you to a list of subfora (including this one - Bewares), one of which is Share Your Work, where you can post samples of your work for feedback and critique.
There's a password - vista - which you'll need to give the first time you view it.

Thanks, Barbara. I actually meant, where is Uncle Jim's Writing forum? I keep reading references about it (forgetting now the exact name. Write with Uncle Jim? something like that?)

The Learn Writing with Uncle Jim thread is in the Novel Writing forum.

Bought by Roman & Littlefield Dec '15, to become an imprint of Globe Pequot. Home page currently reads:

Stackpole Books is under new ownership (see the announcement at Publishers Weekly). We appreciate your patience while we move the stackpolebooks.com website to a new platform.

ETA: transition complete.
